tried casting eldritch blast on the short sword in the beginning, even hellrime blast, it said "not a valid recipe"

I don't actually remember ever doing this in MOTB, but I assume it's like you would do it in the OC. Which means you don't use eldritch blast, hellrime or any invocation.
Open your character sheet, click on the Feats tab, look down the list until you find Imbue Item, drag it to a quickbar. Now click the icon on the quickbar and then click on your Enchanter's Satchel full of ingredients. That should do it.
