How does this work? I've heard people talk about it and I've read about it on the wiki, but I can't for the life of me get Shiala to appear on Ilium as a commando. She is supposed to show up and say she doesn't know how to help people and you don't get the "help survivors of Zhu's Hope" quest.
It supposed to be that this happens if you let Zhu's Hope get wiped out. Well I've done that several times and it never happens. She always shows up and wants to help the (non-existent) survivors of Zhu's Hope.
I'm on playing on 360, could that be it? Maybe it is a botched import flag? That's all I can figure at this point.
Has anyone gotten Shiala to show up as a commando? If so, what did you do exactly?
How to get Shiala to appear as a Commando on Ilium

Yeah, I'm thinking it is either a broken import flag or something version specific.
For example I've heard of people playing ME2 and not having the choice to select Anderson or Udina as the Councilor. I know every time I've played ME2 I have to make this choice on the shuttle because in the XBox360 version of ME1 the Councilor choice happens AFTER the final save game is made.
So... maybe it's something like that? Even when I kill all the Zhu's Hope colonists I still get news reports about survivors and I get Shiala or that nameless colonist.

Well, I didn't know about that possibility, but the wiki is pretty clear:
"However, if you allowed the Feros colony to die (but allowed Shiala to live after freeing her from the Thorian), then her dialogue and interactions with Shepard will change. She will say instead that she is a commando and doesn't know how to help people, but she will try. She will also not flirt with Shepard once you help her."
So, kill everyone else at the colony, but let her live. I guess the reasoning is that she'd like to help the colony as she does usually, but if there's no colony (no people at least), she'll look for something else to do.
I'd like to try this plot arc someday, but unless you already wanted to RP it that way, it seems like a huge effort for something (apparently, we won't know for sure until ME3) pretty insignificant.

No idea then, and I don't have such an import to test it myself. Maybe there are other variables, like, I don't know, skipping the sidequests on Feros about the water, the varren, etc? Or maybe it's just bugged or something, I've searched in youtube, but only found the normal scene with Shiala in ME2.
You said you've heard people talk about this, maybe more details on that could be useful, or just asking these people, if possible.

Are you sure the colony is properly dead? IIRC it can survive if you persuade Jeong even if you kill everyone in Zhu's Hope,

Yes, I'm positive it is dead. I did no sidequests (unless you count finding that data in exo-geni), I killed Jeong.

No clue - I always save them, though sometimes Jeong dies of a gunshot wound

I got her to show up as a commando by leaving a couple of the infected colonists alive, but not enough to trigger the colony remaining viable. I did all the helping the colony quests, killed Jeong, saved Shiala and left 3 colonists alive.
She still gives you the help the survivor's quest, the dialog is just different.
She only mentions being a commando as a response to the Paragon dialog choice after the quest is over.

I feel her survival is a mistake, she is green now, I'm betting a future Thorian hybrid evolution coming on.
