I have no problem with a game being dark and gritty(actually I love those kinds of games) but there has to be some kind of reward for the player, when I have played through a really dark and gritty game I want to feel like ''Damn even though it felt hopeless it felt so rewarding in the end'' these endings don't give me that feeling.

The endings are very post-modern, but I think that is simply a byproduct of our culture. We don't like happy endings anymore.

Given the fact our world is pretty much in a sh*tty state, I'm pretty much an Escapist. I'm longing for some happiness I can't find in reality, therefore I'm writing ... and I'm playing ME. Now there's no "good ending" but just the same depressive stuff I want to escape.

It's all that - ME seems to teach us: life sucks, deal with it, there's never a happy end.

games are not movies, you invest much more of your time in a game(especially a game like mass effect) and as a player I want some kind of reward at the end for all the time and feelings I've invested in to these games

Do not generalize, there are loads of people who still love happy endings. Including myself.

Same here. I'm into Death/Black metal, horror is my favorite movie genre, Lovecraft(whose characters often end up dead or insane)is my favorite author but when it comes to the non-horror-scifi and fantasy genres I prefer happy endings, especially when they're in game format.

The ending of Braveheart isn't that bad either compared to the fate of Shepard and the Normandy and her crew.

I think its more that people don't like happy STORIES. People love happy endings, generally (from what I've seen) more so when the story itself is heartbreaking. It's the idea that no matter how bad something is that if you fight hard enough you can find happiness/resolution in the end.

I have to believe that the writers wouldn't be this heavy handed.  It's one thing to pepper in depressing stuff, but what makes something effective is having the other side of it to compare it too.  If we have no happiness or reprieve from being constantly beaten over the head about how DARK and GRITTY and HORRIBLE everything is, those things lose effectiveness.  I mean I feel like that's storytelling 101....

According to Mac's Roadmap to Happiness blog post (LOL ironic blog titles) there will be reprieves, but that the story is "about the journey, not the destination."

So we'll get lighter moments, romantic moments, but we'll have to view them through the filter of knowing that it will all end in tears.

See, they knew what would happen and they are trying to soften the blow. They know how much this will ****** people off. Why are they doing this?! It's the end of Shepard's story, they could do whatever they want. It's not like they are forced to make one ending in different ways in order to easily transition into the next game.

The way he phrases it 'about the journey not the destination' it's like he's not fond of the end either. It doesn't make any sense.

As I put on the "roadmap to hapiness and love" thread:
From the endings it looks more like Mass Effect 3 is the roadmap to depression and despair.

I was actually looking forward to ME3, even after the shocking failure that was DA2... Had been running a new Shep through the first two games at a leisurely pace and all... but now?

Why go through the trouble of "making choices", when it all turns to **** no matter what? What a laugh. I'll just watch some Let's Play on youtube, and perhaps buy the game when it hits bargain bin prices, if the action elements look acceptable.

A sad end to an ambitious attempt. Back to Skyrim for me, looks like... oh, and the new Bioshock is coming out at some point too...

DA2 ending seems quite desireable at this point. I'd prefer a "and everyone went their separate ways, never to see the hero again (except the LI), and went on with their lives" at this point.

plus what ever bioware say about future mass effect games with no relays how can  you have a game when you cannot leave your own planet

Answer:  You place the settings a bit further into the future...when civilizations are struggling to establish themselves back into space and re-integrate with each other.

I think a more salient question is:  How do you "top" a war with inorganic gods?

Answer:  You can't.

If they set future installments in the ME universe as we know it so far, anything and everything would either seem mundane or eye-rollingly contrived in comparison.  Period.

The only way they could keep this franchise fresh and interesting for the long haul was by resetting the universe so even basic things would seem exciting.

Examples:  Maybe the Batarians will get "out there" first and have a dominant society before humans come along, and your PC is part of a Second Contact War.  Maybe the Asari have to engineer Asari/human hybrids to keep their species from going extinct with an isolated gene pool.  (An excuse for male Asari.)

I'd even venture to say that Bioware didn't really have an option...they had to do this to give the universe a longer shelf-life.  Which means their ending options were limited to: "Do we inflict this ending on everyone now, or do we overwrite the "happy" endings later?"

They knew it would alienate some players, and I'm sure they chose what they considered to be the "lesser evil."

I have this sinking feeling of dread that the ending will ruin the whole series for me like BSG's did.

That said, while I am satisfied by the endings (they weren't complete crap), it makes me much less attached to certain characters because I know they are stranded in space with no hope of rebuilding galactic civilization ever again. Tali, Garrus, Joker... they will all die because they won't be able to survive by themselves on a starship that has immensely limited resources.

But, at the same time, it is a happy ending for the universe. The next generation of species, once they rise from their primordial mudpits and develop brains, will be able to flourish without the intervention of the Reapers, and be able to forge their own destiny going forward. Shepard sacrificed the present for the sake of the future, and I like that sort of ending.

It's a really happy ending once you think about the bigger picture. And I am very much satisfied by what BioWare has done.

All I want is an ending where the people i care about in-game are with shepard and are happy. I don't give a single **** about anything else.

I learned a long time ago that Linear RPGs are bad if you want to escape from reality.  If you want to be an escapist, play a happy game, or a Sandbox like Fallout or Skyrim.

That's the one thread of hope I'm holding onto. It doesn't make sense. A lot of very smart people made this game, and forcing everyone into a hopeless ending is stupid. They're too good to screw up this bad. Hopefully, there's something we don't know that will make this better, or at least make it understandable.
