What, you thought caber-tossing was just for fun? Silly English-folk...

Scottish/English banter, even on Bioware's forum...

Does Scotlands future tech enable them to change the ending of ME3, if not it's pretty useless :P

Well, we can always try to deploy the 'Wheres Yer Troosers' maneuver on Bioware...

For all this grief if the "The truth" DLC is real it better come with Nigel Fishnchips as a squad mate.

Just finished my first playthough, and the ending.....I'm not so fond of.

I hope if they are thinking of giving us something else, like a dlc that makes it better, they do it soon. I was so excited about finally finishing the game on my break, and then this....ending business not working out so great.

I´m bumping what I said before, just a little edited. Hope the friends who didn´t read before do it now and think about it. I think it´s very important.

I just wish to acknowledge how much I love and respect Bioware. They produced my favorite games, and the ME series is the best. The only solo game that I loved more is also from them: Kotor!

I, and most everyone here, do not wish to sever any relation with BW. But I think Bioware may (may!) not be understanding our point. I think they may feel all this is unfair because they worked hard to respect the wishes of fans between games, and they are working on the supposedly DLC that will make everything right.

But we don´t know that! We had a game with a lousy ending! Period.

So far, BW may have planned a great campaign ending. A great surprise. It would be the new way of marketing and of making the fans "extra happy". I can imagine the meeting when someone said: "let´s make an ending that covers the story, but it´s just a dream". After a month or two playing, we release a surprise, and already satisfied fans will be even more happy".

But there was one problem with it. The game ending didn´t amuse the fans. They hated it. It was badly realized.

It was an idea, but didn´t work. And the fans are disappointed with that idea. They now know of it, and don´t agree with it.

So, I think the best course would be for BW to try to be in the fans' shoes, or at least listen to the profound "unhappiness" that it caused, even if it would be substituted by joy after the DLC release, and come forward with news and, maybe, say they are sorry. And realize this is a course that should not be repeated. Tried; didn´t work; let´s move on.

After all, a DLC should never be fundamental to a full game you bought. It should just complement it, add side quests or equipment. Let´s not start a bad trend by making DLCs fundamental to games. I bought them all from all the games I have from BW. But the day they start to be fundamental to the game I bought, is the day I stop buying from that company.

Yeah keep an eye on that one... she might swig a few drops of alchohol in our tea... it will make our fleet vulnerable

nope - she is a doctor, so she knows the dosage after which you are vulnerable, so you can drink what she offers without hesitation, as you are doing so on the chief-medical-officers orders :innocent: (and as she seems like sheppards - and the rest of the crews - councilar, too, she knows if you need a drink, too :)

so cheers to you and cheers to the doc (i will fetch myself a whisky now...have to turn in soon, got stuff to do tomorrow)

got to add one thing though: the german fleet ain't a one person show anymore, i got the back of my fellow germans (as well as the back of anyone who wishes a different ending - or rather: endings...as there should be the chance that you barter it all away and the reapers win)

so, SSV Zugspitze (the only mountain wort mentioning in germany - everything else is small potatoes compared to what other countries have) is reporting in and "we" (in that case, me ^^) are loaded for bare  with the escorts SSV Munich (me being from bavaria) and SSV Cologne standing by and the fighters of the SSV Konrad Zuse keeping the "skies" near us clear :D

so, again, cheers and let's keep our fingers crossed as the endings available ATM are just "nothing" IMHO

greetings LAX

Regardless of the game-hours we have invested in the Mass Effect series, I think the more important aspect is emotional investment. I think it's safe to assume that most people in this thread had at least a modicum of emotional investment in their characters and crew. Far more than most films/books.

I feel like them asking people whats wrong on twitter while staying silent in the forums is their version of damage control to an extent...I mean twitter limits you to 140 characters so you cant really say much to them at any given time and they in turn cant be expected to say anything beyond the unhelpful criptic nonsense theyve been saying so far

I could deal with this and wait patiently if theyd just give us a straight answer either "nope no endings but we have this generic multiplayer stuff no one wants for the low low price of $9.95! hope you werent expecting closure!" or "yes there is something in the works official announcement will be soon because we love you"

its the vague teasing thats killing me

I have an idea. If this synthesis ending is so agreeable to this Master Reaper AI, why didn't they build the Catalyst themselves and throw an organic in the synthesis soup beam, many many cycles ago? No terrible reaping necessary. Except maybe they already did this and that's how THEY were created and now they're just homicidal maniacs.

I still can't get over the fact that when organics "screw up" and build synthetics, the Reapers harvest/absorb organics instead of just destroying the synthetics, teaching/helping the organics to understand the consequences of their actions and leave. If you value life/consciousness (which the God Child claims they do) you don't destroy it, you teach it. If your kid is old enough to drive, you don't say "Well you're getting too smart now, you can drive this dangerous machine. You might hit and kill someone someday with it, I'm gonna have to kill you now so that doesn't happen."

How infuriating! I normally end up killing the mech entirely before breaking the glass..it's super strong glass. I went into sneaky witch theif mode to sneak up to it and was like "WHAT IS THIS TRICKERY" and then almost died as I came out of that mode and got shot at...a lot.

Hey, I remember some talk a while back, pre-release, about endings getting leaked...where did they go? Were they any better than what we ended up with here?

This is what ending were supposed to be:

Tazzmission wrote...

 proof endings were changed

After
checking these boards, bioware forums, the twitters of various people
involved with the game, audio file rips as well as some information I've
gathered from other sources, I decided to talk with someone who used to
run their own review website who still has ties to some people in the
video game industry. That includes Bioware (they had sent him early
review copies of the first ME). Anyway that's not what's important. The
point is what I'm about to say you can take with a grain of salt if you
want. I'm not here for attention or because I'm a fanboy of bioware. I'm
simply here to help you all make sense of this situation. It will make a
lot of sense and put the little things you've all found together. The
reasoning for the ending change was they needed more time to implement
it (this was supposed to be the reason for the delay) but Kinect
implementation and the desire by some people (perhaps EA) to have an
ending where things are left to interpretation messed with this. The
ending was quickly altered which is why things don't "fit" and there are
plot holes. Anyway, below is how things were supposed to happen.

The
original ending was SUPPOSED to be extremely varied. Everything
remained the same up until the part when Harbinger shoots at you and
your team. This is when information that has appeared here already comes
into play. There were going to be various outcomes determining how you
reached the citadel and it was HOW you got there that determined what
endings would be available to you. The following were the different
scenarios from worst to best (based on EMS and war assets)

A:
Your whole squad gets wiped out (the two crew members you took with you,
Anderson). You struggle to make it to the citadel. Right as you're
about to make it to the beam, Harbinger talks to you, saying you've been
defeated and he kills you. Joker tries to swoop down to save you, but
he also gets shot down.

B: Most of your squad gets wiped out.
Still only you are able to make it to the citadel. Once up there, you
must confront the illusive man alone. Because of this, unless you have
high reputation and either talk him down or renegade interrupt and shoot
him, he kills you and tries to control the reapers, but fails as he
discovers he was indoctrinated.

C: You and Anderson make it up
to the citadel together and make your way to the control panel where you
confront TIM. The same thing plays out where you can talk him down.
With high enough reputation, you can "save" Anderson but its not
necessary for you to make it to the next part. Anderson dies after TIM
is shot or kills himself like in the ending we got.

D: You and
Anderson make it up to the citadel together while you're two squad
maters, who clearly survive, are holding off the reapers from following
you to the citadel. Everything continues the same here as "C" until
after TIM is shot and killed and the final conversation that Anderson
and Shepard have (which is much longer than what we got). You get the
shorter convo in C.

[The following you only see with outcome "C'
and "D"] Shepard looks out at the war going on and activates the
crucible. Hacketts says its not working. This is when Harbinger talks to
Shepard through TIM as he lies on the ground. Harbinger tries to
convince you that you've fail but you can argue with him. Harbinger says
that he has your crew in his cross hairs. We see the Normandy arrive
(the joker dialogue that was cut) and the rest of your friends help the
two squad members you brought with you face off against Harbinger and
his reaper minions.

message detailYou
basically have a choice. You can submit to him and he claims he will
spare your squad and earth until the next cycle because he is impressed
that you were able to make it this far. This is when the motive of the
reapers is more clearly established. Harbinger reveals that in the
previous cycle, the prothean empire became too vast and they began to
control all the other races, which would have prevented all of our races
from developing. However, through more discussion, Shepard can uncover
their true motives. They fear that they will be rivaled by something
more powerful than they are (that this cycle will create AI that can
topple the reapers). This implies they are merely fearful for their own
survival and that is why they purge all life but they convince
themselves they are protecting us.

Either way, you can submit to
him and save your people or take your chances. Having 4000 EMS, not
submitting to him you would lose everyone, but still eventually get to
the three choices we actually got (more on this in a second). Having
5000+ and depending on how you resolved conflicts between characters and
races, certain people will live or die.

After rejecting him
(whether you lose everyone or not), you end up in the area where vent
boy was but hes not there. It's just you and "Harbinger". He explains
that a new solution is needed. The solution he tries to convince you to
take is merge (to perseve his kind). But if you have high enough
reputation once again, you can open the control and destroy option.
Harbinger tries to talk you out of it by discussing how your races are
divided and mentioning the geth incident. You convince him otherwise,
and it is at this point, the control option opens next where he admits
that shepard may have a perspective he never considered. Harbinger tells
Shepard that if he destroys them, the relays will be destroyed as will
the geth (which is true. This is the only ending where the relays are
destroyed).

Now for the four endings.

If you submit to him
before the three main choices, the reapers leave earth but end up
wiping out every other race who haven't proved themselves worthy.
Shepard dies.

If you merge, the reapers leave and like the ending
we got, we see all the characters we know with green eyes as a green
light brightens the sky. Shepard dies for the same reasons in the ending
we got.

The control option, the reapers leave. Everyone
cautiously celebrates while joker and your LI look up to the sky and
wonder what exactly happened. Life goes on but its hinted that the
reaper threat may return. This ending ends on a cliffhanger.

The
destroy ending does destroy the relays, but its implied that with all
the races on earth, they, together, will restore what they lost and will
attempt to work together. if shepard lives, your LI leading your squad,
will be looking for you. You are beamed back down to earth (its assumed
shepard was somehow blasted into the beam? this is the only
questionable part). It ends with shepard's hand coming out of the rubble
and breathing. Still a cliffhanger of sorts, but you can assume they
will find him/her obviously.

It was (slightly) better than what we've got.. :crying:

This is closer to where it should have gone. At least the central theme would of had continuation. Literary license or not, if this was a book, it would never make the best seller list. Heros or heroins don't need to die to impress us with some sort of vague idea the author has concocted.

This actually sounds likely to be what went down.

Not perfect, but, IMO, SO much better than what we ended up with. Why? Because within the story framework BW built across the trilogy, it makes sense. Yes, it would never win a Hugo or Nebula award, even if a publisher picked it up, but it's true to the story, it fills at least the major plot holes, the Reaper motivation is not NONSENSE, and THERE ARE OPTIONS THAT ARE TRULY DIFFERENT.

Oh, and... no Magic Posterior-Pull AI Energy Boy.  <--- best part

Crap. Who's going to own up to making that EPIC FAIL decision? Hudson? Walters? Gamble? Anyone? Anyone?
