Hello there, fellow graduate student.

I'm supposed to be writing a chapter for my doctoral dissertation right now.

I think we can both agree this is far more important than either of our respective work ;)

Absolutely; especially given that I'm treated like a Conrad Verner around the department. But then again, I digress.

Also, looking on the ME3 Twitter page, I see a lot of people complaining about the ending in pretty harsh terms (it sucked, was crap, garbage, s**t, etc...) and then, when they're asked what they didn't like, most of them haven't even responded. I don't know how much it's worth but BioWare is actually asking them to back up their statements and they're not responding to them. Seriously, BioWare is asking for feedback from these people and they can't be bothered to respond to them? Can't help but think this makes them, and by proxy us, look bad. Hopefully they get on top of it soon.

Yes, that's very frustrating. I sent them the links to the Ross Lincoln article, and the YT review in my signature; no response yet.

It's been close to four days since I "beat" ME 3. The PC that I beat the game on has was turned off promptly after the Stargazer scene and the system shut down afterwards. It has not been turned back on since. What a gut punch the ending was.

So I briefly told a work friend a little about our situation because she caught me reading an article from one of the sites that expressed better than I can our grievances. She looked at me and said you know it's a game right?' And she didn't say it very nice it was a little condecending. I know why we're doing what we're doing. And I'm holding the line to the bitter end. Why did her remark sting so much?

"It's just a book." "It's just a movie." "It's just a game." Different people enjoy different mediums. So to us, it's not just a game. It's our interactive story. Where our choices were supposed to mean something. That's why it stings so much.

I can't even explain in words of how truly grateful I am of your comment. It has conveyed my thoughts completely.

We could throw them a bone yes? I know hold the line but we want them to be on our side, we want to be on their side we want to hold hands and be friends again too. So Canadian...whatever.

We don't want the fine folks at Bioware to think we hate them. I encourage anyone with a Twitter account (not I, unfortunately) to reply to that and let him know how amazingly awesome the rest of the game is. I'm pretty sure everyone here absolutely LOVED the rest of the game, it's just those final 10 minutes that go haywire.

I agree that we don't want to seem bitter or petty about this, but haven't we gone out of our way to continuously say that we thought everything up to the last few minutes was brilliant? It was!! So I don't get their insistence on asking for what was good and refusing to engage about the problems.

FAN: Can we talk about some serious problems in the ending of ME3? I thought that overall it was brilliant, but the last 10 minutes just destroyed the whole experience for me.
BW: What did you like about it?
FAN: Well, like I said, I thought everything up 'til the ending was superb, but then...
BW: What specifically did you like? Give me some examples.
FAN: Well, I'll be happy to, but can we discuss the ending please?
BW: You said "brilliant." What did you think was brilliant?
FAN: There were many amazing moments, but please, the ending...
BW: We're psyched that you loved it so much. Tell us more...
FAN: =sigh=

Take the URL and put the tags ["img"] and ["/img"] before and after it... without the " of course.

I have no doubt this has been posted but this forum moves like a wildfire, what are peoples' thoughts on these?

If we get relyable confermation on this, then I'm sure everyone will be VERY happy. Including me.

Right now it's just a rumor though. So until we get confermation, keep holding that line!

My biggest problem with this: the original "leak" was posted on 4chan -_-

Not gonna hold an opinion on this yet because, well, it's 4chan.

It would be nice if they said something about it...I'm starting to think that if they announce something, it will be at PAX East...:pinched:
I mean, I'll hold the line until then, and if they do announce it, I will love them forever...

but since it will take them so long to say anything, I'll always wonder if they changed it because they had planned it from the beginning or was it because we were held the line?

To the folks talking about how depressed they are and how others just don't understand:

When I was 10? 11? or there abouts I read a fantasy trilogy that was slightly above my reading level. The final book concluded with the main character winning but at the cost of nearly all of his friends and his dearest love. It ends on a positive note somewhat as he'd just defeated the evil forces threatening the world but at great personal cost. He goes on but is permanently scarred and saddened by everything.

Now this is fairly standard stuff for pretty much any form of media - has been since the tragedies and comedies of old. But to me at the time, my world ended right alongside the main character's. I'd spent untold hours finding these books, slogging through them, opening up the dictionary when I didn't understand what was going on. When I read the end and soaked in the what had happened just like the protagonist I set down the book in a daze and cried.

For at least a week I was in a numb state. My family thought something was wrong with me but how was I supposed to explain? I tried to but it just wasn't worth it. You wouldn't have been able to feel the impact of the character's pain unless you were right there on his shoulder the whole time like I was.

It's been many years since then and I've grown up with a healthy dose of cynicism about the world in the mean time. While I've had strong emotional reactions to other media since nothing was quite like that first devastating blow. I suspect it has happened to many people in one form of the other. While few stories are told well enough to garner this kind of response the ones that do are usually, like a childhood accident, unforgettable for better or worse. I can still tell you to this day what happened at the end of that book: I haven't picked it up since I finished it almost fifteen years ago.

So, what's the point of this stroll down painful, fictional memory lane? That your reaction to your story, the one you had such high hopes for, the one you have loved for years, is completely normal. If you're been around since day one you've had the better part of five years to love ME. That kind of thing isn't just a video game or book or movie at this point. You have a real emotional attachment to it. It would be like your pet dying (depending on how much you love your cat, crazy cat ladies/gents). It doesn't matter if your friends or coworkers or anyone else even met your cat. What matters is that you loved the crap out of the little bastard and now it's gone.

So if you loved the crap out of ME and now that love is gone, realize that you didn't just get shafted by a game company. Something you love was taken from you unexpectedly. Deal with it accordingly. Just don't run out to get a kitten and name it Shepard. That makes us all look bad.

Whew.

How about a parrot? I can even teach him some phrases Sheppard say, and above all, I can teach him to say "HOLD THE LINE".

Jokes apart, great post, and perfectly understandable reaction to it all.

First time poster, but having finished the game, I felt obligated to add my two cents.

I am a longtime fan of the Mass Effect series, I even considered Mass Effect 3 to be the game I looked forward to most this year. I thoroughly the enjoyed the first 39 hours and 55 minutes, with its heartbreaking and beautiful moments; the shooting challenge with Garrus, the discussion with Tali of a house with a view, writing the time capsule with Liara, Mordin’s heroic sacrifice, as well as Legion’s, and Thane’s final prayer. These moments defined the story for me. Over three games, I had come to care for these characters. I had no need for my Shepard to survive; he had worked so hard to make sure to provide a better future for the galaxy, even if he never got to see it. That would be his legacy. There were only two things I wanted from the ending, closure for the characters I had become attached to and to see the influence of Shepard’s legacy. This is why the last five minutes disappointed me so much, everything I had done and everyone I cared for, it all became irrelevant.

I am at lost to explain how Bioware could have created this ending, especially after how well they had crafted the rest of the game. They had to have known it would not please fans. I can only hope that Bioware will release some kind of content that will provide a fitting conclusion to one of my favorite series.

I am in the same boat. I just can't understand the ending compared to the rest of the game, it does not compute. There would always be things to nit pick about but how do you get 99% of the way there almost perfectly and then drop the ball off a cliff. It was not a little misstep the whole game just comes to a grinding halt and stops making sense. Once the beam hits everything gets confusing but the final conversation with Anderson saves it and then it just all goes to heck on a glowy elevator.

As has been said before: let's try to cut out the negative images. It's things like that which could get this thread shut down. We want Bioware to see that we're civil about this whole thing so let's try to limit images that could potentially harm what we're trying to do here.

^ They would be the ultimate trolls..

I haven't discussed this with people I know, people wouldn't understand. My analogy is imagine going to a restaurant which specializes in a certain dish, say pizza. You go to the restaurant again and again because you love that dish and you keep coming back because of that. Then one day you go for a big event and they serve you with something completely random and tell you that the restaurant is closing down. Similar principles ...ish.
