We are so on the same page about the Reapers and the letdown of the "spacegods" path that Bioware took.
I thought I was alone in that analysis.
Actually, I really liked how Bioware did that in ME1 and 2. The devolution in the portrayal of the Reapers as Lovecraftian space horrors into merely an advanced, omnicidal, alien race was very organic and intriguing. I very much enjoyed how as Shepard made gains against, and learned more about, the Reapers they become increasingly accessible...if not entirely relatable...villains. It really paralleled the theme and backstory of humankind venturing out into the cosmos with a sense of wonder and awe, to be disillusioned by the reality of it, as explained by Kaiden way back in the beginning of ME1. That was all really, really cool and concise, and it perfectly framed the development of the trilogy culminating in the final conflict with the Reapers.
Especially with the running thing with the ME series being a paean to science fiction altogether, and how sci-fi evolved to be less wondrous and romantic over the last few decades with more focus on science, introspection of the past and societal deconstruction.
