From John Riccitello's (CEO of EA) Wikipedia page:
“The company is expected to close its current fiscal year in March with a 13% revenue gain and adjusted net income up 32% from the previous year. Overall revenue is expected to pass the $4 billion mark this year.
I am in no way accusing Bioware as I believe we should assume they are working with the fans in mind first. However, you can imagine an order given from a higher-up at EA to Bioware, "We need our profits to look good for the share holders so we need Mass Effect pushed out the door in March so we can get those sales. The game isn't done? I don't care, just slap on an ending and get it out there, we can just charge them for DLC afterward. We pay our PR team for a reason."
Again not accusing anyone as I can't know what went on for sure. However, this is why fans get scared when their favorite developers are bought out by bigger parent companies. Deadlines need to be met, so valued fans simply become customers.
