Before I post, I personally thought the trilogy was wrapped up poorly and certainly flawed. Now...
The Re-Take campaign appears to be over. Sorry folks. If you think Hudson's letter (which he didn't even post himself) lends any hope? lol. You really must be desperate for good news. The PR damage control is obviously in it's last stages, and they're just wrapping things up in the backyard.
If you think Hudson asking for feedback on the ending because they've absolutely no idea on what the fans 'wanted' translates to any form of promise/compromise for a new Ending DLC, you need a reality check. They're not gonna start a project that would take them months for a DLC that totally invalidates/replaces the ending they chose while they're getting pats on the backs from their peers and the gaming media.
You lost on the media front. You have to understand, one of uniques about the gaming industry, is how closely tied majority of its media outlets are tied to the developers.
There might be a bit of a split on whether or not the ending is good, and based on numerous major outlets I read/listen to, it's a pretty even split actually. However, regardless of how they feel about the ending, the majority of the media does not support the idea of 'redo' on the ending at all. Not only because how closely tied they are to Bioware both business-wise and often personally, but also because the gaming media has a bit of a complex when it comes to 'integrity' of games as an 'entertainment medium' compared other forms of media (TVs, books, and movies). Bioware redoing the ending in response to the fans would be like a nightmare and a step back for them, because it's something you'd never see in TVs, books, or movies (which is ironic, given how much they've pushed/embraced the concept of DLCs this gaming generation).
The Child's Play movement was very neat to see. However, for every media coverage that at least showed/mentioned the movement in a positive light or at least somewhat of a neutral stance, there have been at least two-three doing just the opposite, regardless of how they felt about the endings themselves.
At this point, this movement has fully been classified by the 'outside world' as a movement by the minority of disheartened fans (in most cases just "sappy idiots that didn't get it"), or as Hudson put it "
some of our most
passionate fans". Hudson finally coming out and starting to speak to the community shows that their damage-control in the media is more or less done. Now all he has to do is calm its fan-base down with questions like "well what would YOU like to see?" and bait the desperate hopefuls into going 'guys guys let's be calm and see what happens', and wait for the movement to break itself apart. You're already seeing a split in the movement about this, and as more time goes on, the still-vitriol-filled fans will start acting up and reinforce the ugly image, and most people just get tired of it. This was bound to happen anyway, considering a DLC as substantial as the ones people would be satisfied with would take MONTHS of planning and production, there's no way this kinda movement/vitriol would last that long. At the end of the day, it's still just a game, and people have lives to live.
Even if Bioware decided to change the ending, you REALLY think they could do a good job at this point? Voice assets, in-game assets, and all of the other **** they would have to change around and fix? What? For a fan-approved ending, they never had the mind to do or fully understood in the first place? How is a product of something like that going to appease you? Only thing they could possibly do within a reasonable timeframe/budget is maybe tack on a few cut-scenes and maybe add an epilogue or whatever.
While Bioware enjoys its pats on the back and cookies sent by JJ Abrams (yea he did that), you're just gonna have to come to terms with the fact that one of most significant and well-done trilogies/series in the past decade just happens to have a crappy conclusion. The game is done, while it was an amazing ride and definitely a hallmark in the history of gaming, the ending sucked, and I am sorry, but I just can't see that changing.
ps. I absolutely enjoyed all of the things this controversy stirred up, and some of the questions it raised about fan-bases, the gaming media, and the 'integrity' of the creative process. Also, Child's Play movement was very nice to see, good on you guys.
