Uh, a martyr ending is by definition a "Jesus ending". Which is what we got.

What's with this 'we used to get the ending we wanted' nonsense?
Bioware has always provided limited endings, and they've never been particularly happy or optimistic since ME1's, which was an ending for a game that might not even have gotten a sequel.
How is the ME2 everyone survived not happy?
How is the good ending in KotoR not happy?
How is the DA ending (which had varying degrees of "good") not happy?
I seriously have no idea which bioware games you've been playing.
Yes they have always provided a limited number of endings but usually ones that cover all major camps.
What makes you think that dead main character = bad ending? The entire galaxy is safe because of your actions, thats a good ending (just like self sacrifice in DAO)
DA:O sacrifice ending was sacrificing your soul because the Maker is a jerk, thank Gaider for the DR.
Funny enough, I planned to take the ending where Shep survives before knowing that. It just feels wrong that he ends stranded from everyone else (who apparently end stranded themselves).

So where is the official posting that confirms these endings, hm?

You thwarted a Reaper plot that had already reduced tens of thousands of people to genetic paste, and you still have the prospect of a full-on Reaper invasion in the not-too-distant future. "Happy" that is not, nor an ending. I would call it more of a best-case scenario than a happy ending, where you know things couldn't have been better under the circumstances and could have in fact gone a lot worse.
How is the DA ending (which had varying degrees of "good") not happy?
Because regardless of happiness levels, Grey Wardens go insane within three decades and are expected to commit ritual suicide by throwing themselves into a hopeless battle at that time.
So no matter what happens, your character is fudged. Except it doesn't come out as fudge, now, does it?

But let's think for a moment: IF we save earth, and destroy the reapers. The citadel is moved to Earth during the game, and the final choice will happen there. Which means Shepard is in Earth after the destruction, so are all the civilizations, ships, troops, from every species Shepard gathered to help retake Earth. The protheans reverse engineered the mass relays. So, with the help of Turians, Salarians, Asari, Krogan (maybe even the Prothean himself) *, which will want to get back to their homeworlds, wouldn't it be a logic outcome that everybody would try to build mass relays ASAP, and eventually finding the Normandy crew wherever they are?
As we say in Brazil, "Hope is the last one to die!".
EDIT: forgot about Quarians and Geth!*

Afaik BW (Chris???) said: the endings won't make everybody happy.
Now, I can live with that. I enjoy games with multiple "grey" endings if they come in different shades of grey. ME3 seems to have only ONE kind of grey and that's kinda depressing dark-grey. There's no "bright grey" ending, not even a "grey" (neutral) one.
So I'd say, that statement should be changed to: The endings will make nearly everybody unhappy.
Regardless of your choices, Shepard either dies or may survive separated from his/her friends forever. That also includes the LI. There's no good "personal" ending for Shepard and the crew (it could have been the "sweet" part in the "bittersweet" endings), just a bitter one.
And the other "global" ending for the galaxy is also a rather dark one, regardless of player's choices.
So we neither get a "bittersweet" ending (just several bitter endings) and also none that could be improved by fanfiction.
More important than that, however, saying there are no bittersweet endings locks sweetness to Shepard's survival alone... a ridiculous claim given the nature of the term.

That was pretty weak-sauce. "So, yeah, those endings were perfectly happy... but focus on what happens afterwards, when we cannot see it anymore!" And Arrival was a DLC, which entered the picture long after the game came out.
DA:O had a perfectly happy ending, with the slight ominous undertone of Morrigan disappearing with her demon child.
