It's pretty bad when I come to a thread so often It's like I'm living in it. In a thread with thousands of replies, I shouldn't be able to remember most of the posters names..

Even if Bioware fails us, at least I can imagine I was part of something great, with a group of people I thought were pretty amazing. Gives me faith in humanity..

Thanks, this is why i'm glad I found this thread, to know im not alone in my frustrations. In dragon age we had the option to die a hero or to live and run off with the LI and there were many others endings to. To know how easily they could have catered for everyone and just chose not to makes it all the more disappointing. After 3 games I think Shep deserves a chance at a happier ending.

I wouldn't have minded if they had made me buy extra DLC, do every possible mission perfectly, play that damnable multiplayer to death and just about any other hoop-jumping exercise you can think of to get it.

Just to know it WAS possible to get that ending, if I really wanted it, would have been fine with me.

Instead, they went with:

Option 1 - Goof off, ignore the missions, play badly......get ending A.

Option 2 - Play normally..... get ending A

Option 3 - Play like a Trojan, do everything you can, make a real effort......get ending A

It's this that winds me up the most, especially after they promised us so much.

To deliver so little.....it still burns, even days later.

Just out of curiosity, was there anything that anyone actually liked about the ending? I personally kinda liked synthesis...even though Shep's death was disturbing and it made no sense whatsoever...

I for one do not actually have a problem with the mass relay destruction theory. Yes, The Arrival DLC showed that if you crashed a giant asteroid into a hitherto believed indestructable Mass Relay then the resulting explosion would wipe out the system the relay was placed in.

If we accept Starchild's story for a second that a) he exists and B) he is the citadel then he is Reaper Tech, just as the Citadel is and the Mass Relays are. As such, it would be possible for whatever flavour beam they send out to merely cause the mass effect field in the mass relay to destabalize and shut down. The Mass Relay would be destroyed in the resulting explosing due to the immense heat release from the reaction, but the explosions would be localised.  If they were actually huge explosions you would see a marked change in the composition of the galaxy as it would cause billions of supernovae to happen all at once, and once you had unwelded the eyeballs from the back of your skull, most of the milkyway would be cosmic dust and no stars. The Arrival deals purely with the premature cessation of a Mass Relay using the power of inertia, rather than a self destruct cycle. Like the difference between using a wrecking ball to take apart an ikea table and an screwdriver.

The expanding spheres of coloured sparkly whizz are not, as a result, the fiery progress of an explosions, but rather a shockwave of space magic which, depending on your flavour, is either:

R) the mother of all EMPs wiping out all synthetic life (and consequently all VIs and electronics aboard all spacefaring vessels and pretty much anything else in the galaxy which uses anything more advanced than clockwork),

B) a carrier signal which changes the control orders in giant robots we were previously led to believe as sentient, but are obviously nothing more than VIs or remote control space squid.

or

c) has the amazing capability to transform organic material (such as, say, hydrocarbons) into part synthetic material, not by altering their molecular composition but by merely re-writing DNA. It can do this to the DNA of synthetics too in order to...no, wait....

So, yeah, Mass Relays don't go boom. Doesn't get you out of the sparkly whizz space magic problems though BioWare, sorry, I'm stumped on that one.

Only problem I have with that is it shows the shockwaves on the galactic scale, anything moving that fast save neutrinos would carry some kind of mass, takes us back to the Artillery Officer on Mass Effect 2 Citadel informing his probies that "THAT BULLET KEEPS GOING UNTIL IT HITS SOMETHING WITH THE FORCE OF A NUCLEAR EXPLOSION" (or whatever the exact wording was).  That many explosions would be the equivalent of storm surge/tsunamis and destroy craziness... not to mention the citadel was 'one big mass relay'.  It was right next to earth when it blew up lol.

Alright ladies and gents, fellow gamers and lovers of the Mass Effect franchise (because, let's face it; if we didn't love it, we wouldn't be this upset over the endings and broken promises).

I'm pleased to say that we continue to hold the line, that more and more media assets and war assets are coming on line in our support...that we vastly outnumber our detractors, and that we have continued to be a paragon of civil gamer protest the likes of which the internet has never seen.

One way or the other, we are making history here folks; never before has there been this much media attention focused on something which is, quite honestly, a historic moment for video games in general.

In ages past, we've been forced to endure things like what happened here...only before, there were no specific promises made. Before, the endings were generally static, and the stories that we played and fought through generally worked with them.

Sometimes, that wasn't the case....sometimes, game developers harkened back to the old NES days where you got a brief 'game over' blurb, along with perhaps a short ending clip to go along with it.

All this time, we've stayed silent because, well...it was just a game. It wasn't a product we purchased, it wasn't something material...it was just a game.

And for years and years, we've had the same thing rehashed at us over and over again...the same basic concepts, only with different characters, different models...and at first, that was enough. When that was no longer enough, when the stories were truly predictable, they used creative script writing to mask the same contents all over again...and again, we were satisfied with this for a time.

The few that were upset with the games were generally few, rude, and better off ignored because their complaints were minor...at the least, they seemed that way because of the manner of their presentation; 'you suxors' or 'I h4t3 u' style that showed incredibly immaturity.

Then DLC appeared....swathes of new game content that, once upon a time, would have been packaged together on an expansion CD that was sold for about $20 dollars total, or included as part of the game initially...or even patched in for free. Now, it was being sold for $10 dollars a pop, and only contained parts of what would have once been included. Of course, this wasn't entirely bad; sometimes this let us miss things that weren't any good, so we tolerated it.

Then came the Mass Effect series. A game which, because of the way our choices influenced and changed events both minor and major in very personalized ways (within the limits of current technology), was extremely cutting-edge. Other games have come close to the level of choice that Mass Effect has in determining how we impact the story, but none can truly match it.

We played it, we loved it, we replayed it again and again to see how different decisions would influence the game world...how each choice in Mass Effect 1 would influence Mass Effect 2, how both games would influence Mass Effect 3 when it came out...

And then, after much hype and promises from the Devs, the Mass Effect 3 release day came at last...and it was -glorious- (sorry, this just fits, I know it sounds preachy lol).

It seemed that Bioware was prepared to be a shining paragon for video gaming not seen since the early days, when there was much innovation...everything about the game clicked, everything seemed to work flawlessly (well, as flawlessly as a day-1 release ever is these days)...it seemed that they had been true to their word, and we were -ecstatic-.

Then, we got to the end...and as each new wave of gamers has finished, their cries have joined our own in a massive world-wide cry of 'WTF!?'

If this works, even partially, it's setting an example that game companies will now have to follow; listening to their customers when enough of them are angry. Bioware, if they listen to us, will likely become an industry leader...not just because of its talented creative staff...not -just- because of the high quality games it has, and will produce...

But because it will be the first to have created this level of passion for its products, and the first to respond to that passion.

Bethesda added to Fallout 3 to appease fans who wanted to keep playing after the end...and wanted a better ending...

Bioware will be the first to actually alter a game ending because its fans and customers declare that what they have done has hurt something so valuable, because the fans and customers say it wasn't good enough, because the fans and customers say

'Bioware, you must do better! You have DONE better, do not stumble now! We believe in you'.

And so WE, as gamers, must keep doing better ourselves...we must learn, as we have been in the days since this all began, to keep a mature and level head when expressing our dislike for something...

Retake Mass Effect, we are laying the framework for the future. Here. Now.

Hold the line.

This.

Yes thats it!

When that shockwave caught up with the Normandy it was damaging enought to knock it out of the sky, so no matter what color of space magic it was it was obviously destructive.
