v1.12

I'd like to remind folk that sometimes we are going to get people who may attempt to disrupt this movement, but I ask that you treat their opinions with respect, opinions are neither correct or incorrect, they are "opinions", I'd also like to remind folk that it is against forum rules to call "anyone" a troll, no matter how badly they might act, if you have a problem with anyone, report them quietly using the report button or a pm to the moderators, do not engage them.

What I don't understand here is that the Mass Effect games were, initially, marketed (correctly) as being a form of interactive 'film'. Or at least written and structured as if they were a film - which is why the idea of making Mass Effect into a film was tabled quite quickly and why there was a 'film grain' option in the first two games. However all big budget films today usually get screened to test audiences just to make sure they work with the audience - and if they react badly to a film studios are far from shy about reediting or even rewriting parts of it. Those films that don't get shown to test audiences are the ones reviewers are wary of, and on the whole tend to also be films that are not very good - such as the Green Hornet film of 13 months ago.

I can't understand why BW didn't consider getting some fans in to watch the story unfold through the cut scenes to make sure it worked.

you dont' even have to have them play it....they could have selected 50 random members of the forum....send them the endings in youtube clips, etc.....
see the reaction....barely any effort involved...

... because it makes sense within the character's arc and was handled well. Anakin was a good (albeit impetuous) person who got turned to the dark side during a moment of vulnerability/weakness. He tries to convert his son to the dark side, as well, because he sees some of himself in his son. Luke's reaction to learning about his father and what he has become plants a seed of doubt in Vader. When his son is about to be murdered by Palpatine, he finally realizes the full implications of his choice to join the dark side. He knows that he must pay for his mistakes with the ultimate sacrifice in order to save his son and redeem himself. Darth Vader's arc is about redemption.

If you're going to pull from Star Wars, Shepard's character arc is closer to Luke Skywalker (hero's journey) or Han Solo (scoundrel becomes reluctant hero) depending on how you play your Shepard. Shepard has nothing to prove. He has even died to protect the galaxy once already. An example of a game story which is more like Vader's arc would be Red Dead Redemption (even in the title). John Marston is an outlaw whose family is taken from him, does a lot of bad things, has to make things right, and has his decisions finally catch up with him in the end. He, like Vader, dies in the final confrontation defending his family. This ending was praised by critics and fans alike, because the story was handled well and the ending fit in context with the themes presented throughout the entire story.

We can handle dark or bittersweet endings. They just have to be done well. This ending was not.

You know, I've been thinking about it. But I'd be kind of totally ok with the endings if Garrus and Tali died with me...They where the two I brought through every end battle since the first game. Hell, I would have been ok with it if any of the squad mates who where with you when you got hit by Harbinger's beam died with you. My problem isn't the fact that the universe was destroyed (that's kind of what I wanted to do in the first place, anyway.) but that you're separated from everyone you tried so hard to defend. That's what pisses me off about the endings.

Listen, we all know that there is a war going on and people will die, worlds will get destroyed, sacrifices will be made, etc etc, but really, is it too much to ask for a proper "happy" ending where Shepard survives and doesn't get separated from the others?
We've all invested so much time in this universe and the characters we've come to know and love (or hate) and now all of that is just getting blown out the window.
I understand they are trying to make things serious and dramatic and stuff, but in the end, it's a video game and most of us want to choice for a proper happy ending.
The endings we have now are just disappointing and disheartening, like, what's the point?

perhaps because vader's death was explained, we saw what happened with the group of rebels we came to care about....star wars was basically about the rise fall and redemtion of darth vader.....mass effect 3 (and the series) was about taking back earth and saving the galaxy from the reapers......you want shep to die, cool, i'm good with it, but not in every playthrough, and not with leaving you hanging....does he die on that planet? did that really happen? did they install startrekteleporters when i wasn't looking?

as dave chapelle once said 'you need to wrap it up'

The thread just goes so fast its hard to keep up. I for one am soundly impressed with the articulate and constructive nature of the majority of the Retake Movement and yet I am finding it increasingly hard to accept detractor arguments such as "its just a game, They made it so live with it or no other media changes its endings" and while I always calmly say that I respect their opinion and that I'm not wanting to change the ending their happy with, not one single anti ending change person has stated in respectful terms what is so good about the Ending(s) that cannot be refuted by a simple web search or wikipedia browse.

I am perhaps a little tired of the lack of substance in their arguments while ours are so erudite

First and foremost good morning!

Now on to what you posted. That is one thing that baffles/ annoys me. All these other sites that belittle us and what we are taking a stand for have never said what exactly they think is good about the way the game ended. When Bioware said they were going for something thought provoking and artistic the journalists just ran with it instead of thinking: "Well why do people hate the ending do bad"? "maybe I should look into their concerns".

Im not trying to bash here but it feels as if they just played the game without paying attention to certain things or didnt even botherreading the codex. Heck it has narration for crying out loud. They just played to get from A  to B and so on it seems.

What I also don't get is that if they read up on why we are here and that we are in fact fans of the game in general aside from re the ending then they would have no merit for such negativity. If they loved the series as much as us they would look into the inconsistencies we have mentioned and how everything we had done didnt matter. All they did was see us say the endings were bad and went right to calling us spoiled and entitled and that Karhy Bates reference.
At the end of the day its their opinion but at least have enough common sense to read up on why this movement is important and why we expect the best from Bioware and when we don't get it we are going to let them know they can do better.

They as journalists should want that too.

Hold the line!!

I'm gonna go make waffles.

I was thinking of something similiar, though I imagined your squadmates waking you up (hence Starchild saying "Wake up" instead of "Why are you here") and Normandy coming to your rascue. Then the forces you gathered along the way through the game (at least some of them) help you take down Harbringer... than i dunno :D
This Idea with Illusive Man is not a bad one.

It is a sticky subject, and a lot of different pinpointed complaints for the most part.

It will be tough, but still well within the realm of possibility to be fixable.

But yea, for the others out there, feel free to take a look at this idea.

Somebody who knows this guy needs to talk him down from this action, at the very least wait until after pax, give Bioware a chance to do something first, he is just making the whole movement look bad, it's him the press will be looking at as an example of the rest of us.
