Mass Effect 3 Ending and Why We Hate It!


I think this guy really speaks well about the ending.

I've got him favorited along with others, I use them as inspiration when I feel like nothing is happening, he is at the top of my favorites for that video.

Comparing Mass Effect to Star Wars (at least the original trilogy) makes sense.

Both were Space Opera, and if you look at them neither has a unique story. The difference is that SW was happy to be a space opera, and more than happy to finish on the conventional ending that its viewers/fans were more or less expecting.
ME however finishes on the wrong note, and for some reason thought that a 'conventional' ending more or less in keeping with what the 'viewers' had been expecting wasn't the right way to go.

Why? Although the SW films 'end' in Return of the Jedi (as the other films are set before this), the ending did not prevent Lucas Art's from making a fortune by continuing the adventures of Luke and his friends after this point in comics, books and even computer games. Indeed they added extra characters or used minor characters from the films and made them the star's of some of these stories, with the 'main' cast either not appearing at all or reduced to cameo roles at best. Nor did it prevent them from going back and producing three more prequel films, and then books, comics and games set in this earlier period. Why? Because even though we knew how things ended it was a satisfying ending*, one that made us wonder how events had unfolded to get to that point and gave us a desire to go back and wallow in that universe 'one more time'.

(*Disclaimer; I'm not talking about the 'New Jedi Order' stories, which took things a bit too far for me....)

ME3, in some attempt to be different, doesn't do this. The ending (singular) is too bleak and depressing and destroys the entire universe in the process. There is no satisfaction and less interest in going back to that universe to see how events unfolded. And as such no path the series can take from its current ending. It is a universe that, in some five minutes, has destroyed itself and its future.

Just looking at this from a business prospective this makes no sense what-so-ever. A brand that could well have continued going for another decade or more is gone, simply because they didn't want to do something conventional*.

(*And ironically, and has been noted in great detail elsewhere, managed to drop in every conventional trope in an effort not to be conventional).

Sloppy writing, zero quality control and even less foresight....

Yeah, it is sad, we're not asking for them to change the endings, just add a new endings and paths, while there are not many, those who enjoyed the endings should be allowed to keep them.

really this isnt the forum to mention DA2 - though in summary there just saying there not gonna do an expansion pack for DA2 to give you an ending they might do it in a book/comic or something.....er no parallels.

Also they moved folks over to DA3/other projects I guess

If they had given us a range of endings there is no limit to what they could have done.

I'm frankly at a loss to see where a "Mass Effect 4" could go from here....maybe a prequel or some other drama set during the events with other characters. But what would be the point?

On the other hand, Casey Hudson did give us "an ending that no one would forget". Sadly, it is for all the wrong reasons.
