Holy crap it managed to get top story on the tech page on BBC!

Yet, the Editor's Pick comment says how we should be happy with the ending.

I like the comment about how a director wouldn't re-shoot and ending [of a film] if the audience didn't like it.

Funny, didn't they re-shoot two movies all ready? Incredible Hulk and The Amazing Spider-man, which completely retell the stories of those two superheros.

Furthermore, the endings in movies 9/10 times make sense. You didn't see LotR-style magic used to blow up the Death Star.<_<

Hey, we can win "cool" stuff. Yay...

They treat us like Kindergarten children. They don't know their audience and there is nothing cool about Mass Effect anymore.

There is one last thing that we keep forgetting - the Mass Effect film. The studio producing that film is not going to put money into the film if ME3 was a turkey and badly recieved - ESPECIALLY in terms of the story. Potentially a sucessful ME film could net BW/EA more money than sales of the games did - something EA is going to be very well aware of. Not least because I would imagine the studio is having a few words with them about fixing the situation. Compared to the potential profits from a film and/or film series, the cost of an ending DLC is nothing.

Not being a loyal supporter of a ME film franchise (mainly because if it follows the Shepard Story then all of your actions which don't match the film then fall outside of canon) generally my mind does not tend towards thinking about it. As such I also don't know much about it apart from that I have heard that there is a concept for it.

However, this little paragraph got me thinking.

Is it possible that the reason we were given such a narrow spread of outcomes merely scripting tactic to pave the way for the film? If they reduce the ending to a convergent branch than divergent branch, any potential film no longer risks falling away from canon. Could it be that, at the time, it seemed like a completely reasonable idea and no-one had even considered the reception it would receive as they were looking too far ahead?

If this is the case, then fie! for shame BioWare. But yes, if they did leave it at this, they know that the film would probably lose out on a huge portion of revenue.

The BBC is required by British law to be impartial, and this is enforced very strictly - especially in recent years.

Remakes are what you are on about, which is different to reshooting a scene of a flim, but that is done a lot if there is a negative reaction from test audiences anyway. the bbc editiors picks will be from both sides, not the one the editor agrees with, we just need more comments

Plus, I Am Legend had two endings. The alternative one, to my mind, is far superior to the "heroic sacrifice" that you saw in the theaters.

Let it take months to complete. I just want to read straightforward statement soon about that DLC, so further damages can be avoided.

All I need to hear is "Alright, fans, you win. We'll make a more complete ending. And it'll be free DLC."

Really, there's no controlling the damage at this point. Could limit returns, sure, but they're not going to increase sales by promising to make a new ending. Only the announcement that the ending is finished and implemented will do that. Who wants to buy a game on the promise that "it'll be finished eventually"?

I wonder if Bioware is waiting and praying that the more casual players will be completing the game soon and say "Why, that was a perfect ending!" in much the same way that their fans spent the weeks preceding launch praying that the Prothean DLC actually wouldn't be at all important to the enjoyment of the game. Hoping in vain and in denial, specifically.

And bless them if they haven't stuck by that as well, even when it was to their detriment. I have the utmost respect for them when that was happening.

Oh they don't? Let's see, then all pre-release audiences are a myth, Dark Knight never got the cut after Ledger died, I am Legend must be my imagination, Hide and Seek, well that could be my imagination, I'll give them that, House never changed the ending, Oz is only 2 seasons long... Nope, absolutely no movie ever did anything like what we are asking.

Of course, neither ending to I Am Legend is true to the BOOK or even the meaning of the Title. "I Am Legend" is the monster realization moment on the part of the protagonist, where he realizes that he's come to be seen as the monster for this new species of sentient vamps. >.>

That featured comment makes me mad:
"As a game developer (programmer - not at Bioware) I find this story hilarious. Good to hear that they raised money for charity, but people really should put their energies towards worthwhile causes... not the fact they don't like the ending of a video game!"
Oh so raising 70k for sick kids isn't using our energy in a worthwhile cause, eh?

Please keep in mind these folk may not be invested in this game, as a developer he is going to be looking at it purely from his perspective, his story, his creation, what we are doing here is essentially a threat to him and people like him.

I am a software engineer.  If I had that kind of attitude towards my firm's clients, they would be demanding my resignation.

I am one developer who is happily holding the line.

I had one. I was finishing ME3 the way it deserved. Some seconds before I finished the game, I got a critical failure of the mission. Trollfaces were rolling all over the screen. Everything got blurry and I woke up :?
