I love Mass Effect. That's why I'm here. I will tell you all something few people know about me and my personal relationship to this series. I played the first game back in 2008 and loved it as I do any other game. I have played games for fun since I was a kid with an ATARI (yes, I just aged myself). Many people my age drink and go out to blow off steam, and while that is fine, I find more and more I would rather play video games, read or do research to escape. In the fall of 2009 my father died quite suddenly and unexpectedly. I was literally crushed and could not get my **** together, university was on hold - everything...on hold. Finally, early in 2010 I decided to start gaming again. The first game I picked up was Mass Effect 2. I cried at the opening scene when Shepard died and nearly turned off the game, but I soldiered through it and was able to find some solace and peace for the first time in months...just escaping into Shepard's universe.
My point is not that my reason for loving this series is any more dramatic or important than anyone else's - we all have our reasons for being here. My point is that yes, I want the option of a happy ending because that is what I want. I don't want some pseudo religious life lesson shoved down my throat because:
1) that is never what this game was about to me.
2) there is no precedence in this series for not offering my Shepard some way out.
3) I didn't like the Matrix and I don't enjoy tragic stories where there is no hope and no answers -
I've had enough of that crap in my real life and never would have continued these games if I thought that was how it was all going to end.
I respect the fact that some people don't want a happy ending, but this game was supposed to be about choices. If the roles were reversed and there was nothing but happy endings people would be like "well, shouldn't there be an option where Shep dies!?". I would never dream of denying someone the right to ask for that for their Shepard's story. So, yes the whole idea of happy endings may be discrediting to the media and people saying we are whiners, but I don't give a crap frankly. BW is listening (hopefully) and I will continue to tell them the parts of the game that didn't work for me: endgame plotholes and lore issues, space magic, and yes...the lack of a happy ending option for my Shepard.
I hope you all are asking for what you really want (within reason of course!) because if they actually are listening, they aren't going to be able to read your minds, and you will have zero chance of getting it.
Hold the Line!
