There's a ton of (maybe well-deserved) schadenfreude in the past 3 or 4 pages. We have all been through a lot, and there's a certain amount of catharsis in seeing precipitous sales drops and the like, but I'd like to make clear that should Bioware come through with a non-half-assed ending fix, I will be recommending the game to everyone (there's quite a few people waiting on my word to buy). So, Bioware, want to see a sweet +% game sales bump at some point? Fix the endings, please.

To be honest if this was all part of the plan and it turns out we've been upset over nothing and they come out with the most epic amazing ending ever I won't care that I was outsmarted by Bioware. In fact I will be happy for them that they got all this press because if it is as epic as we all expected and want it to be they deserve the recognition. However at the moment we have no way of knowing that this was the plan. We can only hope!

If they were smart, they would jump on this chance to do exactly that...whether it was planned or not.

Lets say they say it was all a stunt, and they planned it.  We'd never know if they actually did plan it lol.  They'd be like "ha! we got you!"  and we'd be all thankful and "awww shucks, you got me!"...meanwhile...*we* practically wrote the endings for them on this forum...

Hmm... did anyone try to type "Retake" in Google search recently?

Every time I do it - "Retake Mass Effect" option appears as first recommended auto-fill... Even Google is on our side?

Still, if it ends out being the stund it seems...well played. At least we may get to see if there is more space magic involved...:wizard:

Ohh, so true!!!  Won't I feel like a donkey's behind if that is the case?  LOL!  But you know what...  as crazy as this may sound...  I still want to believe in BioWare.  I really do.  I know!  I hear it daily now!  "You are a goose, you are silly, you are overly optimistic, you are naive!"  But...  I can't help it.  They gave me Shepard to begin with -- and all the crew and the wonderful worlds to explore.

I just want that back again!

If it is a marketing gimmick by them, then the time to have held their hands up and admitted it was several days ago, at least. A lot of people have wasted time and effort. Not to mention the way it has made us all feel.

All they had to say was: "Look, we understand you're upset. Just bear with us. You'll like what we have coming up."

All this negativity could have been avoided and they would have got the kind of speculation they intended. Instead they gave us the mushroom treatment and its led to where we are now.

They will have to do more than say "Surprise! Here's the ending!" at PAX in order to wiggle out of this one.

If you look at the Call of duty series, they show a 80-85% drop in sales in the second week of release on the Xbox. In fact this figure seems consistant for all AAA titles I've taken a glance at.

Interestingly RPG's seem to show less of a decline in the second week - Dragon Age Origins saw only a 47% (or so) drop in sales after its first week, and even Dragon Age 2 showed less than a 70% drop.

So the drop in ME3 sales appear to be roughly in line with what you'd expect from a AAA title, and more or less equal to ME2's figures. Now what the figures will show for the week after that is a different matter.

From looking at the numbers myself there seems to be a rise in the fourth week for nearly every one of the examples given except ME2 that happened in the fifth week instead.  I wonder why?

A guess would be that sales in the first three weeks come from those people who intended to buy that title all along, but of course not everyone would be able to buy the game on the first week and some might not have realised or forgot the release date.

The fourth week is when people start buying the game based on word of mouth and user reviews - or even after renting the game out.

And now that I write that, it explains why BW would announce DLC at PAX...it would be almost a month to the day since the game was released and word-of-mouth sales would be expected to increase.
Or if you like it would have been a perfect time to announce that there was an ending DLC, not only would you (ideally) get a raise in word of mouth sales but all the original customers would go back to replay the game, and possibly pick up a DLC pack in the process. So if this was a Marketing ploy that backfired there might well be two DLC's available - the MP DLC we already knew was coming and the ending DLC to get people to return to the game - and both would have been planned in advance.

Of course the current word of mouth is...not going to help sales to put it mildly. And an ending DLC that people have to pay for...

It is also possible that they intend to release some 'post-it note' 'ending' in the hopes that will increase sales as the original players pick it up and try it. Of course the rather small problem with this is that the quality of the 'ending' will be known within an hour of it being released...So if it turns out to be a rushed 'post it' ending expect sales to vanish along with BW's customer base and reputation.

I was certain they had screwed up...but after re-evaluating the situation and looking back on everything we were told...or they tried to tell us...it adds up. And this means the media is watching BioWare. So if they do release the ending at PAX, then we've just given them a huge amount of free advertising.

I think I just got outsmarted by BioWare...not impressed.

Well, let me put it that way:

If someone kicked me in the nuts and said "Why are you angry - maybe some hot nurse will come around the corner in a few minutes and put some ice on it, you should thank me." I will still be pissed.

Also, if this is the case look at it this way - they've been able to make tweeks to it based on all of our feedback. This is thinking VERY positively though......

I would like to believe that, i really do, but, with all this bad PR bioware is getting because of the ending, this is hard to believe.
Its like if all your friend think you are a criminal, and instead of defending yourself, you just say "don't worry i'm listening".

I feel that this is a really well written article that balances our quibbles with the ending and the truly amazing portions of the rest of ME3

I would assume good word-of-mouth advertising.

Yes, that would be a fair assumption.

Lan

Both the original ME and DA:O exhibited word-of-mouth patterns where sales actually increase after the initial dropoff.  DA2 and ME2 both exhibited exponential decay curves, but for different reasons.  ME3's first week sales will be higher than ME2's based on the success of ME2 and all the marketing hype.  The true test of how good ME3 is will be how many people go back and buy / play ME and ME2.

This was more or less what the Forbes guys were speculating yesterday.

The gist of what they thought was that the original idea had been to release the 'full' ending of the game as a DLC (most likely a free one) after the game had been released world-wide. What they didn't expect was for their to be so much backlash, which made announcing that there was an ending DLC in the works problimatic.
Basically the idea was that the rumour about 'The Truth' DLC was in fact correct - although that was never brought up. Basically it was meant to be a PR/marketing stunt than badly backfired.

This WAS pure speculation on their part - and I will note that they have no better idea what Bioware has in mind than we do at this point. But they felt that this would make sense on several levels. They even gave a reasonable explination as to why Bioware wouldn't make any statements about such a DLC (if it existed) at this time.

The alternative is, of course, that Bioware has screwed things up so badly they have not so much dropped the ball. But Dropped it, kicked it into their own goal, stuck a spike through it and then for good measure driven a steam roller over it.

I've posted my theory many times - it was just exactly that - they weren't just trying to indoctrinate Shepard but us as the specators.......problem is - they didn't expect most to hate the ending as we have - they expected to polizes......not unite their fans against the ending.....

I still think "the truth" will be released - they can't announce this was planned along now because it has become such a PR blunder......

If they had played their PR cards a lot better - it would of turned out differently.  Only having the one app on Ipad and not on any other platform I think hurt them more than anything.  They could of easily used that to drop hints of what they were planning; they did kinda........but so few people actualy got to see them - its now afterthought.  I think that's why there's no rush now to port it to android or windows.

If that app had been on more platforms - used it in conjuction with twitter - instead of being one of the greatest PR blunders we've seen since New Coke.......

BW has some incredibly intelligent people there - that's why this whole situation is so hard to understand.  I mean the ending can be explained through  nhimism*sp* but it can't be connected to the rest of the story.....LOL not even space magic can do that :D

So this will be studied for years to come; what went wrong........I honestly think - not having that app on other platforms and using it to help sell - "The Truth dlc aka coming free"  is what completely crushed this

This is only if the rumors about the truth and the insanely brillant attempt to indoctrinate us......

I shutter to think if its not...

Indoc theory guys, a thought for you...Say Shepard was knocked out, what if your team drags you back to the Normandy and you're on it when it crashes on that planet?...

Verrrrrrrrry interesting. Could be an idea.

I was thinking, perhaps the war with the Reapers isnt over. Perhaps Shepard wakes on the planet and we have to start from there...or any number of other possibilities...such as perhaps this is the basis of the next Mass Effect series. Shepard wakes up on that planet and they start from the "dark ages" of technology...the next series could then be Shepards decendants...
