If it is a marketing gimmick by them, then the time to have held their hands up and admitted it was several days ago, at least. A lot of people have wasted time and effort. Not to mention the way it has made us all feel.

All they had to say was: "Look, we understand you're upset. Just bear with us. You'll like what we have coming up."

All this negativity could have been avoided and they would have got the kind of speculation they intended. Instead they gave us the mushroom treatment and its led to where we are now.

They will have to do more than say "Surprise! Here's the ending!" at PAX in order to wiggle out of this one.

This, this, this and this again

To be fair, they all did try to warn us, however at the start...all a lot of people did was take their anger out on Jess and whoever else they could find. Imagine tens of thousands of people abusing and insulting you, even if you were trying to warn them that something was coming (trying as much as was allowed by bosses).

If what we got WAS the end to ME3, shame on them. At this point, its just an idea...but still, we haven't been the easiest crowd to talk to. Tonight I've had 2hrs sleep and spent the rest of the time talking to others on their experiences with people who dont like the ending...and...well...no wonder people think we are a bunch of whiny children. Not saying its us here, but anyone anti-ending is automatically seen as a Retake member.

At any rate, we can't cast all the blame on them for not telling us everything. We, in general, have come across as hostile to a lot of people. So before we can expect nice things from them, we need to make sure the hostilities stop.

Send forth all legions. Do not stop until Mass Effect is retaken.

It is ME1 that was a real diamond.
ME2 was just a pretty very well done thing. Most of good things still meant thanks to ME1. And to a promise that we'll have ME3.
And ME3 isn't in any part equal to ME1.

Interesting quote from this (pre-release) interview with Mac Walters:

"...between Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3, one of the
things I looked at was -- I don't know if I'd call it the writing, but the
cinematic style and delivery of Uncharted 2 really drew my eye. I look
at that and say, 'Wow, those are some very compelling people.' I'm happy
to sit there and watch what's going on in that scene -- I don't even need
interactivity in that scene because it's so well done
." - Mac Walters (emphasis mine)

Yeah, who needs silly ol' interactivity in an interactive game? And there you have it.

First point, as noted by the guys at Forbes;

The backlash to the (current) ending would have made it impossible for BW to have revealed the existance of an ending DLC. Forbes explained this in the chat yesterday, giving several valid reasons as to why they would opt to remain quiet because it would, in fact, have made the situation worse not better.

The second point is that...no one would have believed them. Consider that every single statement made by BW in the last two weeks has been torn to shreds within minutes of being posted. 'You'll like what we have coming up' would have been taken to mean 'Hey guys...you're going to just LOVE the MP DLC...'. This is an understandable reaction from customers, considering that this is exactly what they did with DA2. In that case people wanted to know when the patch was coming out, as the game was unplayable for a large number of people. Bioware made some statement about 'wait for an announcement' and 'You'll enjoy this'...only for them to then announce an appearance pack for the game rather than the patch. Things got a little...heated...after that.

I noted yesterday that Bioware does seem to have learnt a few lessons from DA2's release. And one of those lessons is 'don't say anything about anything until you can fix what the customer sees as the more important problem'.

Yeah, negativety wasnt getting us anywhere. Speculation and thought inducing practices generally get this lot talking and reacting more. Plus, it makes as much sense as the Indoc theory.

we'd want it to be better. we should do hard to make it better.

Whatever the truth of this matter, the fact is that there are no winners in this.

We've lost trust and faith in Bioware
Bioware has almost certainly lost sales
The Mass Effect franchise has been tarnished
and so on...

There are no winners, except for the Kids charity. I just hope, BW/EA don't try and point to that as justification for whatever has gone on here.

I feel that this is a really well written article that balances our quibbles with the ending and the truly amazing portions of the rest of ME3

Agreed. Well done.

Agree. No winners here.
Except for making an another nice example of creator-customer relations. :)

Exactly.By using the media that we caused to follow them, Bioware has the chance to make more $$ off this than it did before. I mean, there was no advertisment where I live for ME3, but now its all over the place for everyone to see. Maybe not as advertisment yet, but that can change if BW does have something good for us at PAX.

I believe the proverd is "Any press is good press".

^ Agreed. I am happy for the people that found closure in the ending, but for the bulk of us that didn't, there will be long term effects when it comes to BIoware. I have always trusted that they would be the top in interactive storytelling/characterization, but the way this franchise has ended leaves big doubts.

I've thought this all along. If it was a marketing stunt, it hasn't done them any favours in the long run. Every new release from them is going to be treated with suspicion. There's always going to be someone at seminars and the like who will put up a hand and ask the question:

"Now, you have put an ending on this game, haven't you?"

Haha no kidding.  If this was a stunt, it backfired.  Its funny, I think of how they could have fixed this mess, and to me its unbelievably simple.

"Hold onto your saves.   *wink* "  Give SOME indication that it may have been intended.

Because fans love feeling clever and like they figured something out.  If fans saw this wink from Bioware at the beginning, it really WOULD have been speculation for everyone....not just anger.

Didn't Mr. Gamble have a tweet or two that said pretty much EXACTLY that? "if you knew what we had planned.... you'd hold on to your copies forever" or something to that effect...

Honestly if this works it's one of the greatest marketing stunts in history. It's also going to ravage the core fanbase and make for a LOT of upset people

I'm personally okay with the sales figure. Well best case scenario ME ends in a satisfying way, BW does good with sales and we're all on the same team. Barring that, I like that sales were still overall good. I never wanted Bioware to go out of business. That's the last thing this movement should be about. On the flip side, its a good wake-up call that the sales numbers are dropping so fast. The big wigs have to realize that they could be making quite a bit more money if they had just stuck to what they had originally stated the ending would be like.

There's allways a winner, but only time can tell who :). But I think, maybe we as a community have won (not in terms of a new ending) but I think it's been nice to discuss in a civil way, few trolling, flaming,...

Thank You so very much :)

Looking at those figures - that must have hurt a bit.

So now my words and thoughts go to Bioware - please make beautiful ending DLC with many possible endings (happy ones included), spare mass relays and all we'll be okay.

Just as it used to be.  And do not pull the stunt like this again!

Ok, if Bioware came out with a "perfect" set of endings...exactly what they promised...I wouldnt forgive them for all this, but I would still have to thank them for the game as a whole...but only when it is whole. Cant blame everyone in Bioware for something a set few did.
