FINALLY! I renewed my xbox live subscription and registered my copy so I can post here.
I've been lurking since page 616 and dying to post my thoughts. I won't mention issues with the ending itself, but the people who attack us for not liking the ending.
First of all, this entitlement stronzate
The old saying "biting the hand that feeds" comes to mind. We fans are the foundation of the synergy between producer and consumer. If the fans are angry, a product will most likely fail after a while. Without hardcore fans, a series either starts to feel lifeless, as the fans are what drives the devs to go that extra mile. Do you think there would be so many calibrations jokes in ME3 if the fanbase didn't make it a meme? Do you think there would be nearly as many cameos if people didn't fall in love with secondary characters like Blasto and Conrad Verner? Would the reporter appear in every game if nobody enjoyed being able to put her in her place through civilized or barbaric means? Just look at Halo Reach. Bungie ignored complaints about armor lock for too long, and eventually the hardcore fans left. The casuals started to follow, until the people who could bear to face that in the game were the only ones left and the playlist numbers were ridiculously low. Also, how is a group of people who want to change an ending any different than a group of people who want to get rid of noob tubes or armor lock? Bad writing in a story based game is just as gamebreaking as an overpowered weapon in a multiplayer game. So why aren't they treated similary?
Second, this pretentious "artistic" talk
Say you're eating pizza(let's say Pizza Hut for convenience's sake), and you're about to finish the last piece when the delivery boy runs back in with a hammer and breaks all your teeth. Are you going to be satisfied? Will you say to yourself, "Well that was unexpected and realistic. Finishing pizza is cliche?" Of course not! You expect to finish your pizza! You were promised by Pizza Hut that they would give you a satisfying pizza eating experience, not this atrocious curveball. Now you won't be able to eat from Pizza Hut again because your teeth are messed up. You wouldn't if you could either, because you no longer trust Pizza Hut.
This is what happened with the ending, but a little less extreme. We were promised various and "wildly different" endings. Really all we got to do was decide whether we wanted five years of loving fandom to be unraveled with Mountain Dew Voltage, Mountain Dew, or Mountain Dew Code Red. How uplifting!
Finally, doesn't anyone else think it's funny how people say happy endings are cliche when really the mentality of "Let's do a morally ambiguous philosophical rip off of Orson Scott Card" is what's actually the cliche?
Anyways, glad I can finally include myself here. It's nice to see so many likeminded people in almost perfect harmony.
