Since people seem to be posting their letters here, here's mine - I haven't actually sent it yet, so if you happen to actually read it, could you let me know what you think?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
To Whom It May Concern:
I’m writing alongside other Bioware fans and gamers as part
of the Retake Mass Effect 3 movement in regard to the ending of Mass Effect 3,
and the Mass Effect franchise.
We’re very grateful for all the effort and care that has
gone into the development of the Mass Effect game series, and we appreciate
that Bioware has taken the time to evaluate and address our feedback;
specifically in the statement made by Dr. Ray Muzyka.  In light of his remarks, we’d like to clarify
some of our goals.
In Dr. Myzyka’s blog post, he states that Bioware is
currently working on “game content initiatives that will help answer the
questions, providing more clarity for those seeking further closure to their
journey.”
We would like to stress that expansion of the current
narrative, if presented without revision or additional options, is not an
acceptable solution to our concerns.
Many of us feel that the current ending structure fails to
provide either emotional or narrative closure.
It contains numerous elements that appear to either contradict previously
established ‘canon’, or to have extremely dire consequences which are
discordant with the tone of the Mass Effect series.  The experience of each ending (in terms of
what we see and hear) is also extremely uniform.  Any major differences are purely speculative,
and ultimately uninteresting, as emotionally, the endings are no different (for
example, the fate of Shepard’s squadmates is essentially identical in all cases.)
A lot of fans have already provided numerous suggestions, on
the Bioware Social Forums and elsewhere, of how to alter Mass Effect 3’s
conclusion, and what we would consider an ‘ideal’ ending.  While these vary, there is a common theme I’d
like to highlight: the inclusion of more choices leading to significantly and
overtly different outcomes – including the possibility of a
happy/positive/victorious ending (Shepard alive with his/her love interest, squadmates’
fates known, relays intact, galaxy rebuilding).
We would like to see the creation of additional or
alternative game content that will allow for a significantly different endgame
experience based upon our actions and choices throughout the course of the Mass
Effect series.  We would like content
that provides a logical and emotionally appropriate conclusion to a very
personally-crafted gaming experience.  We
would like the tone of the ending to be reflective of the rest of the game as a
whole, defined by the choices we made.
Thanks very much for your time.
Sincerely,
Well done
it's actually quite sad. the frustration, confusion, bargaining and sadness in this whole thread.. just wow. in a very sad way..
blargh. i feel tired.
edit: also 'source' directs you to the exact post here.. just pointing out.
Keep up the good work old chap, mabye they will have the new endings out by the time your done :D
Also, we can't get the refund we want :P
I asked at the (german division of) Amazon, and they denied the rumor of offering refunds.
If I was that unsatisfied by the product, I should contact the publisher/studio - that's what they told me.
Last week I requested refund with Amazon.de for my CE PS3 version, received a confirmation of acceptance and could even print the bill of delivery that I am supposed to include in the shipment. Nevertheless I haven't sent it in yet as I am still hoping for good news. On 6th April the return window is closing for me and I may take the chance, keep it and hope for the best.
This idea is wonderful! I hope Bioware understands that we don't hate them with this. And I hope this opens a little space in their "hearts" for our cause!
I'm so tired of being called a whiney entitled gamer as they squeeze 10 dollars out for every little thing after I paid 60 dollars. Im whiney and entitled just because I have an opinion. I'm losing heart in video games as a whole. It's an industry when they take my money, and artistic integrity that shouldnt be suppressed by my voice when I'm not satisfied. I wish Bioware would defend their fan base's right to an opinion and to voice that opinion 1/10th as much as they've defended their individual rights.
<Also snipped, sorry>
I'm glad I opted for buying AC art for our new house over ME art at this point (bc of ME's ending) and wonder if "all" those "fans" who defend artistic integrity want to buy the ME art I bought awhile back... I was actually planning on designing our basement's theme around Mass Effect. Crazy, huh?
Not crazy, in fact I suspect that this sentiment is growing with many 'gamers'.
Okay so I know we all haven't been on the best terms with Kotaku but I just read this article for poops and giggles and found the content to be... well... ironic?
Quote:
"But, instead of looking at the classics like they should, BioWare is
looking at the hottest new thing on the Block trying to capitalize on
its success."
Anyone see a correlation between that and the ending? Because I do.
I can't honestly understand the thought process Bioware is using right now... its like they have completely detached themselves from reality...
Although considering that they are alienating all their fans right now... looking for new players is probably the only thing they can do to stay afloat...
In my opinion... They've been on this slippery slope since DAII and if this movement doesn't give them a reality check then they are really doomed...
Hey everyone - popping back in for a minute before class.
I remember seeing something the other day about sending e-mails today, but I can't for the life of me remember which page it was on. Someone had posted something about outlining the issues with the ending, but keeping a relatively "uniform" message. Can someone refresh my memory as to what is/isn't supposed to be included? I vaguely remember seeing a numbered list somewhere...
On a slightly unrelated note, I'm filling the time I'd be using to continue through the game with my other characters by playing around with the TMS/EMS war readiness numbers. Basically, I'm trying to figure out if it actually IS possible to get the "breath" scene without touching MP or Infiltrator or the silly Datapad app thing. Unfortunately, I've only got two sets of war readiness numbers (one from me and one from a friend) so far.
So, I figured I'd ask here. Does anyone have a save from after the Cerberus base but before Earth where you could check your war readiness numbers and send them to me? Preferably if you haven't played MP and the Galactic Readiness is still at the standard 50% - that way the math is easy and I can base it on not touching MP at al. I figure PMs would be best - that way we're not flooding this board with unrelated stuff and they don't get lost somewhere in the threadnaught. :)
All I'm looking for is the asset (like "Quarian Patrol Fleet") and the TMS number.
And if you know of somewhere else I could find the info, that'd work too. I've tried checking other topics, but with the rate things move at around here, I can't find anything that looks like it would work. Thanks!
That's technically not written by their inhouse staff..  Once a week they take a good post in their forums and edit it into a published article.  Which I believe it says at the bottom there.. gives a bit more background where it's coming from Image IPB
Going to get the ultimate revenge on EA,now lending ME3 to my friend, when dropping at his house I was going to give him a mini cleanex pack for the endings but knowing him he would get the wrong idea what they were for :pinched:
Don't worry I am only slightly his friend so he wont be too pissed with me. at least he will understand my pain now and I will have one more to rant to without him threatening to hit me for ruining things.
best comment from him so far was, "played the demo mate, whats up with bioware and killings kids anyway?" If only he knew :o
i really understand the 'at least he will understand my pain now' part. i was out with a friend the other night, and i just couldn't stop talking about it. mostly the ending, but also the really amazing easter eggs and everything. now she's at a point in which she actually wants to play the games. just to understand what the hell i'm talking about anyway. and now i feel like an ass because she actually started. it's not the 'yay, finally someone else to talk to about the game' part, but rather 'when the hell does she get to the ending so i can rant with someone else about how much they sucked'. (also knowing that she will go through the same emotional trauma.. )
i don't think you need enemies when you have a friend like me.
OK letter sent - only took about two hours to come up with everything... i'm apologising in advance for the text wall :blink:
Be gentle... :crying: (and yes, I'm an unabashed Liara fan...)
Hi there,
As so many have in the last day have doen, I would also like to add my
voice to the request so many have made regarding the end of the Mass
Effect trilogy...
Before I being though, I do want to say this - Thank you! A thousand
times thank you! So many people have been talking about the ending of
the game that they've forgotten about the ride we took to get there; and
boy, oh boy, what a ride it was! For five years, Commander Shepard and I
have travelled the galaxy, and I have spent many an hour in the team's
company, enthralled by them, intrigued by them; there were times, I
think, where I may have even forgotten that they're not real people!
(Sad I know, but I like to think of it as a credit to everyone on the ME
team that they created such incredible characters, and brought them to
life in ways that I don't think anyone ever really anticipated :-) )
To be honest, when Mass Effect first came out for the PC, I didn't take
to it immediately. To me, the beginning of the story was too slow, and
for all intents and purposes, it was shaping up to be another
forgettable third person shooter in my books. Then came the quest for
the Asari consort - by any stretch, one of the minor side quests that
shouldn't have done anything really, except give the commander an excuse
to amass more XP and get more money for bigger guns. When Shepard
completed the quest, and went back to her and she passed on her
prediction to Shepard, I remember thinking to myself, "Yeah, yeah, lets
get on with it, I'm getting bored here!" But then she gave Shepard the
trinket. At first, I thought it would be something that could be
equipped, like an amulet (or omni-tool, in this case) and immediately
went to the inventory to see what the nice new shiny would look like.
Only it wasn't there. I couldn't understand it - she'd given Shepard and
I something something, and it couldn't be used? What was going on here?
So I allowed my curiousity to get the better of me, and decided to
carry on playing a little bit more, in the hopes that it would magically
appear at some point... Garrus joined the team, still no shiny. Wrex
came on board, still no shiny. Fist was killed (well Wrex shot him -
typical Krogan - shoot first and ask questions later!), and still no
shiny. Tali joined the group, and, you guessed it, STILL no shiny! I was
beginning to think that something was seriously bugged here, but by
this stage, even though I didn't realise it at the time, I'd begun to
enjoy myself immensely, moreso than I had in a very long time with a
game.
And then Commander Shepard became a Spectre, and things started to get
really interesting. Shep had been given a ship, the crew was shaping up
nicely- all in all, things were starting to look up, I thought. Ash and
Shepard were getting along well, Tali was cute in her own way, and
Garrus had just the perfect mix of dry humour and sarcasm! Wrex was
well, he was Wrex. As for Kaidan, Shepard enjoyed his company, but I
didn't see them being best buds or anything. And the crew! Oh, the crew!
to his day, I still can't get the image of Joker trying to dance out of
my head after he mentioned shattering shin bones! I spent almost an
hour running up and down the Normandy, chatting to everyone, just to see
what they all had to say - and all this before leaving the Citadel
even!
Liara's introduction to the team couldn't have been more perfect. She
came in, and with that shy, reserved, almost child-like naiveté, she
captured Shepard's heart. It was always going to be about doing the
right thing, and she seemed so innocent and lost in this big, bad
galaxy, with Geth and Krogan out to get her, so Shep and I decided we'd
be the ones to protect her from all that horrid, evil nastiness out
there. She was so cute when she stumbled through her conversations with
Shep, and each time, it took only a little nudge from me to bring them
closer together. We just couldn't protect her from the pain of her
mother's death though - all that could be done was to offer comfort, and
the hopes that Benezia was in a better place...
Virmire started out well; I was so proud that Shep and I had talked Wrex
down from doing something stupid - for such a powerful warlord, he
really did let his temper get the better of him sometimes. When Kirrahe
gave his speech, the team was inspired - he knew that a lot of his men,
and quite possibly himself, would die that day, and he knew that they
knew, as well. And still they would follow him - they would lay their
lives down if it meant a chance to stop what Saren was doing. Inspired
as Shep and I were, we'd gotten cocky - we thought that our team was
immortal....
That choice is something that will always carry the bitter sting of regret with it...
Listening to Liara on Ilos was amazing - given the chance, she'd have
stayed there forever, just to study everything; her life's work was the
study of Prothean culture after all! Vigil spoke to Shepard, and we were
warned about what would be happening to the galaxy if Saren and
Sovereign weren't stopped. Crunch time!
It was a truly epic battle! Watching the Destiny Ascension stand against
those ships, her crew awaiting that fatal shot - how could one not
try to save such courageous souls? The Fifth fleet had to help, it was
the only choice. Even though so many sacrificed their lives, on all
sides, Shepard and I agreed that the lives of those on the Council were
worth the price, as painful as it was to pay. Saren realised that he'd
been played by Sovereign, and thought that he could end it by taking his
own life; in a way, I think that he knew that if he did that, then
Sovereign would try to personally oversee Shepard's demise, and that
doing so would leave his shell vulnerable. It was all the chance the
fleet needed to take him down. Sovereign's shattered body came crashing
down on top of the team, and my heart almost stopped! What about
Shepard? Did the team make it to safety? Were they crushed by the
debris? It was agonising waiting for that smoke to clear...
When Shepard stumbled out of that wreckage, and into Liara's arms, it
felt like I could breathe again. It was just... I don't think that I can
adequately describe that feeling - it was just such a rush! Choosing a
human councillor was easy - Anderson didn't want the job, which meant
that he'd be perfect for it; he'd honestly only think about what was
best for everyone, and not try to gain political leverage against any
one race. Still, I was left with the feeling that this peace wouldn't
last - Sovereign had said that there were many of his kind - "Each one a
nation"...  Did that mean that these Reapers were already on their way?
Mass Effect 2 came out, and I was overjoyed to be re-united with Shepard
- well, for at least the first couple of minutes, at any rate. When
Liara got sent into the escape pods, I knew something was up... Getting
Joker out was no mean feat, let me tell you! The man could be such a
stubborn ass when he felt like it!
When that final beam hit the ship, and I saw Shep drifting off into
space, I started to worry a little. When I saw the air venting from the
tubes leading into the helmet, I started to worry a lot! When I saw
Shepard's body start to accelerate towards the planet, I didn't know
what to think. It felt as though someone had taken a blunt knife, and
stabbed me in the gut with it; wriggled it around for effect, and then
stabbed me again, just because they could! See, I'd watched some of the
character videos and narratives, but I had no idea that Shepard would
die in the first part of the game... I was flabbergasted, to say the
least!
When I saw the surgical machines doing something, and heard Miranda's
voice making her log recordings, I felt the first flutterings of hope.
Could they do it? Could they bring the Shep back?
Straight away this time I was hooked. And if anything, it was even
better than before! There were a lot of new faces on the team, and of
course it was always good to see some of the old ones as well! There
were stories, and laughter, and even Serrice Ice brandy, but something
was missing for Shep and I. Something that just seemed out of place...
That something was Liara.
It broke my heart watching her and Shep talk there in her offices on
Ilium. It had felt like no time had passed for Shep, but for Liara, it
had been two years of agony, of not knowing if Shepard was alive
or dead. And it had cost her. The innocence, so cherished and loved, was
gone. But there was still hope, wasn't there?
When the team boarded the Collector vessel, and learned the truth, I kept thinking to myself, if only Liara could have been here. Despite the horror of it all, she would have been...
With the news of the Shadow Broker, there was a chance. A slim chance,
but a chance nevertheless. For Shepard's sake, I had to try. The two of
them belonged together, and I owed it to them to do everything I could
to make it happen! It wasn't easy, and Tela Vasir had some things to say
about Shep's past, not all of which were easy to hear, but in the end,
Feron was free, the Broker was dead, and the day had been saved. Liara
had stepped into the role so smoothly, so calmly, that it could scarcely
be believed! Shepard was so proud of here, and if anything, I think,
began to love her even more!
Donovan Hock was an interesting villian, not least because of his South
African accent! And yes, I'm a South African, and I'd recognize an
Afrikaans accent anywhere! to credit the voice actor, he did a fairly
decent job of sounding like a crunchie (or clutch plate, or plank, or
dutchman - there's lots of nicknames for 'em - all in good fun though!)
Mass Effect 2 took me on an altogether different journey, but this time,
I was better prepared for the choices Shep might be asked to make. And
this time, no-one was going to die! That was a promise I made Shepard,
and I was damn well going to see it through! Jack and Miranda fighting?
They needed to get their ***t together - there wasn't time for this!
Legion and Tali standing off? Same thing! The Collectors had kidnapped
the crew, and we had to save them!
We did it, all right! We took the fight to them, and with the pretty
upgrades on the new Normandy, those bastards were made to pay for what
they'd done to every human they'd ever liquified!
When I saw that final cinematic, where the Reapers started moving forward, I knew, I knew,
that there would be a third part to this story, and that it would be
the battle to end all battles - the entire galaxy was going to have to
come together if there was to be any chance of beating this enemy...
And what a ride that third chapter was! Having Ash back on the team
brought back some painful memories, but it almost worth it to have her
on our side again. Seeing everyone else, all those friends, and team
members that had travelled so far on this journey. Seeing Grunt in
command of his own unit; Thane, who was getting ever closer to his end;
Mordin, and his hidden musical talents - all of these, and so many more.
There was Vega, and Javik, and Traynor, and all of these new faces -
new stories and histories to learn about... And of course Liara was
back!
It was an emotional rollercoaster - the ride of a lifetime! The highs
were so euphorically high, and the lows were so much more than low...
Mordin and Legion's sacrifices were examples of such selflessness and
courage, one could not help but shed a tear for them. And Kai Leng got
his rear end solidly whipped by a dying man! Truly, Thane had found his
redemption in the end!
I could go on forever about my experience in the Mass Effect universe,
and we'd be old, grey men long before I'd finished, but now we get to
the sad part.... the endings
For all the minor issues in Mass Effect 3 (the questing system, the
randomness of some of the side quests, the face import, the characters'
ability to rotate their necks like owls), the only thing that I couldn't
understand, that I still can't understand, is how the desicion could be
made that the ending options presented were in keeping with everything,
that they could be anything that Shepard, be it my Shep, or anyone's
Commander for that matter, would have chosen.
Everything in the Mass Effect universe is about choices, and the
consequences of those choices. You, as a team, have said time and again,
that everything in the Mass Effect universe was put together with the
aid of the fans of the game, and that we, the fans had just as much at
stake as you did... How then could this have happened? All that work,
all that effort, everything both you, as a developer, and me, as a
player - everything we'd put in over the last five years or more - all
for nothing? Nothing that I, as a player, did; nothing that I, as a
player, could do - it didn't matter what path I chose; what decisions I
made... Everything just got shoehorned into a scene in which there was
no real choice. I could:
  • Destroy the Reapers, and kill all synthetic life, blow up the mass
    relays (which would destroy everything in the local area around each
    one) and die
  • Control the Reapers, and by extension all synthetic life, blow up
    the mass relays (which would destroy everything in the local area around
    each one) and die
  • Or fuse with the Reapers, and by extension all synthetic life, blow up the mass relays (which
    would destroy everything in the local area around each one) and die
How are those options? Even with the so-called "magical 4000" mark,
where I could see a brief cutscen of Shepard drawing breath afterwords,
none of those are viable options. Taking any of them would result in the
destruction of virtually the entire galaxy, as a result of the
explosions of the mass relays; not to mention that if these
explosions were somehow different, then there'd still be the entire
united fleet out there that would be stuck with no way home. In addition
to that, how is it that Shepard, who has always fought the status quo,
would suddenly just... accept... these options, without even trying to
fight them?
That aside, the "God-child" approach made no sense whatsoever. Many have
already pointed out the huge plot holes introducing this character
made, as well as the circular logic employed to attempt to explain
everything, so I won't go into that here. I'm sure that by now Chris,
Jessica, and Casey and the team have read everything that everyone's
posted online about it, and have seen the countless petitions and polls
regarding the community's feelings on this topic.
I could understand a lot of the statements made by various people
(Casey, Ray, et al) regarding the ending, and frequent mentions have
been made regarding artistic integrity. My take on it is this, as
callous as it may be: If the game were linear, with only one Commander
Shepard, with a fixed gender, and fixed outlook on life and a fixed
background, and a fixed story, then by all means, there is no need to
change anything - it's your game, and you're will within your rights to
keep everything as it is. Here's the catch though - Mass Effect is all
about choices. From the moment you create your character, you are
making a choice. You, as a player, are in fact bombarded with choices
throughout the games. Everything that you do, is all about choice, and
beating the odds. From the moment Shepard first set foot on Eden Prime,
to the moment the Normandy took off from Earth, it was all about the
choices. There were some fixed points, but even then, a lot of what
revolved around those points are influenced by the players
decisions. Even though there were fixed endings for each of the games
(the destruction of Sovereign in Mass Effect 1, and the mission to the
Collector base in Mass Effect 2), your choices shaped many events around
those endings, and the impact could be seen in almost every aspect of
the games.
But for me, the biggest catch to all this is this: Mass Effect isn't
just something that belongs to one person or team - when you created
this legend, you created something so powerful and epic, something that
has moved everyone who's ever played the games. The developers on the
Mass Effect team have said time and again, that the series is a
collaboration between them and the players. As a community, we have
always taken pride in that fact - Bioware  was always the one place
where people listened. You would ask us something, and we would
feed back to you, and you'd take it into account when doing things, and
it showed. I was alway proud to be a part of that community, even if for
the longest time, I didn't have the courage, or the self confidence to
speak up on the forums the way so many have here. But now, with this, I
join the ranks, and make my voice heard.
For myself, I am simply asking you - no, not asking, but pleading
with you - Please, Bioware, please, please fix this! Not just for us,
as the fans, but for yourselves as well. Mass Effect has the potential
to be the one series that people will still be talking about twenty
years from now, even fifty years from now, it's that much of an epic.
Don't let it die like this; not like this...
It's not about clarifying what's happened, it's about making it right.
It's about taking all those wonderful, moving moments you gave us, and
making them count. Let those war assets in the game be seenl; let those
characters we brought along for the journey have their epic moment in
the sun! It doesn't have to be a happy ending (although I would be lying
if I said I didn't want one - they were talking about little blue
babies after all!), but it IS about giving us that sense, that feeling that what we've done matters - that it wasn't for nothing.
There are several forum threads on the BSN that go into much more detail
with regards to possibilities, and some incredible graphs and
calculators that could be of tremendous help in this regard. I'm hoping
that you've had a chance to look at them, and see just how passionate we
are about this game. I think in some ways, this debacle could be seen
as a compliment to you - if the fans didn't care as much as we do, or
love the game as much as we do, this wouldn't have been more than a blip
on the radar. But we do care, and we do love the game, and we feel so
strongly that you didn't do yourselves justice with this ending, and
that it can be... no, it should be better... It should be the
ending to end all endings, the greatest story ever told, and that its
final chapter should not be something to quietly into the night, but
something to capture the hearts and minds of everyone who's ever played,
who's ever going to play, the most incredible experience of our
lifetime...
Thank you for your time
PS - If, like some of the forumites are saying, that it was all a ruse
and that you had the real ending planned for later all along, then
WOW... just WOW! (and also a little bit of #$%@#$%@#$%@ in between as
well for the pain that was caused! :-) )
I'll be honest I'm not a 100% sure, but from what I'm seeing it's in response to Dr. Muzyka and for me to remind them non-threateningly out of sight is not out of mind.  Hopefully someone in the know will respond for both of us Image IPB
A new article from Forbes; http://www.forbes.co...e-the-industry/
*Edit* They are, apparently, trying to get an interview from Bioware about ME3...if they can manage that it should be...interesting.
