If those headlines came up they'd be laughably wrong for two reasons: 1) They said they were going to modify the endings (somehow) before the cupcakes and 2) BioWare has no "artistic integrity" in the sense they are using it.
1; Bioware did not state that they were going to change the ending. They used the words 'Clarrify' and 'Explain', but did not specifically say that this would be done via DLC or a patch. The media, with the very notable exception of Forbes who appear to be one of few media outlets capable of critical thought who've weighed in on the issue, did report the statement as being 'Mass Effect 3 to get a new ending'. However the comments about additional content mentioned in the statement in question are much the same as earlier comments that were made about other DLC content Bioware was already working on...such as the MP DLC that is expected.
The wording was rather ambigous, and probably deliberatly so, and doesn't commit Bioware to doing anything but a power point presentaion at PAX to explain what the endings in the game mean...Not that they would get away with that methinks....
2; I don't recall Bioware itself ever using the 'art' argument. The claims about 'artistic integrity' have come from 'journalists', using the word in its loosest possible sense, who really need to see a doctor as they seem to have their vocal cords stuck up their backsides. The argument for 'art' being unchangeable has been demolished by rather a lot of smart people, especially in regards video games.
No need to be so confrontational.
As for point 1: How else are they going to "clarify" or "explain" the endings unless they release something that changes the endings? A lot of gamers don't expect to have to play a game - or multiple games - across different platforms to understand the ending to one of those games. So, BioWare has to add the "clarification and explanation" to ME3, however they can't explain the end at the start or middle, so they'd add whatever they are working on to the end. That's what I see their statement meaning.
Point 2:
blog post from Dr. Muzyka I referenced is here Second paragrapgh, last sentence. And I quote: "The team and I have been thinking hard
about how to best address the comments on ME3’s endings from players,
while still maintaining the artistic integrity of the game."
