That's a thing they should have thought about. It's fine for the people who have read the books and understand who Grayson is and what Kai Leng's story is but I didn't read the books so these names / characters have no meaning for me. I have no point of reference for them within the ME universe.
I'm a bit ambivalent about using them. In a way I feel the same way I did about Diana Allers (as a aconcept, if we forget about Wong for a moment), namely that it's a cool little gimmick, taking side characters from all over, something like Batman Arkham Asylum and Arkham City have done. I'm one of those persons who like to find easter eggs and google things I suspect might be allusions, rather than have those things introduced to me.
And therein lies the problem, since, to my understanding, ME is not as all over the placeas my example Cape Crusader is. I mean, ME exists mainly in the three games, everything else being extra, so there isn't any ground to suppose majority of gamers get Kai Leng and such. I don't think the story-telling of ME really works with such characters either, not the way they were in ME3. In ME2, listening to the npcs etc worked, but having some unknown side-ninja to be an active character?
But then again, it wouldn't be any different for me if Kai Leng was replaced with your random Cerberus cannonfood centurion. I named mine Joe. So as I said, ambivalent, and indifferent.
Should I btw try the books? I'm a bit iffy about franchise books, like Star Wars, but every once in a while even they manage to squeeze out a story I enjoy, like Zahn did with Thrawn-trilogy.
