I much prefer the Reapers when they were unknowable deep space horrors. Now they benevolent but stupid. Even accepting the premises that organics will always be killed by synthetics, there are alot of ways to achieve their goals without killing the ones they are trying to save.

See, I would be perfectly fine with them NOT explaining the reapers origins, at all.
When you start in part one by saying "We are beyond your comprehension" Then litterally MAKE IT beyond our comprehension. Don't try to rationalize or explain it so that we can all get it. Just stick from part one to part 3. "You mere mortals are just too stupid to know" Period.
Explaining their motivations tunes the reapers down from this implacable, impossible force into something much more concrete and malleable to the perspective of the reader/player. "If they want this then we can do this" ect ect ect.
Will it dissapoint some people? Absolutely, they'll see it as a copout. But for me, that is a level of speculation that would be great for this game. For almost the entire ME series since I played part one I was trying to figure out what they could possibly want and came up with 3 theories, One which I can say is a fairly good one given the context ME2 brought.
So yea. For me, from start to finish if they would have just kept on repeating. "This is too much chuck noris for your mind to grasp" that woulda been just fine.
I think somebody made the point a while back that we get details where there should be mystery and big gaping holes where we should have gotten details. Hence the agument that the one of the biggest problems behind it all is just very bad storytelling.

Mass Effect 4 Reapers - We are your friends, look we brought ice-cream and everything....You want the blue, green or red flavour?
Why not just a rainbow sherbert kinda thing with sprinkles on it?
Gotta have sprinkles, they represent the space magic dust!

Me too. If they had left that open to "a lot of speculation from everyone" that would have been cool.

Mass Effect 1 Reapers - Our motives are beyond your comprehension because WE are beyond your comprehension. You are nothing and you will die like nothing.
Mass Effect 2 Reapers - Our motives are to expand our species and improve yours. Prepare for ascension mortals.
Mass Effect 3 Reapers - Our motives are really ****ing retarded. We have to destroy everyone to save... everyone? I don't know- seriously man, just roll with it. We have no clue what we're doing either.

Yeah I like the explanation of, " In reaperville we harvest organics, deal with it " rather then the " We sentient machines exist to destroy all organics that are tecno savvy so that their machines won't destroy them."

Ahm, after the amazing three colored plothole filled (open?) ending, I am pretty sure they would want every single writer to help out.

That is good news. I just wish we didn't have so many vague statements about the real scope of the DLC. Maybe they just don't know yet, but some of the PR remarks (a.k.a. the FAQ) are so dismissive I have to say it's difficult to be optimistic.iakus wrote...

Which is somewhat encouraging. I'm sure the writers are looking at Mac and Casey and Shaking their heads.

Well, they'd want almost every single writer helping out, at least :innocent:
And while I am skeptical that they can pull it off myself, at least it looks like they'll make a serious effort.

Haha I agree. To paraphrase Angry Joe:
They're basically telling us why their poop stinks, instead of giving us something that isn't smelly poop

This exactly. Why can't they just cut the PR crap and give a straight and honest answer to what we can reasonably expect from the DLC. Add as many caveats as necessary but gamers, consumers and people in general appreciate honesty.
Especially since their current PR strategy has infuriated more people that it has placated.
