Well saving the council in Mass Effect 1 had no effect on the outcome of the Collector Base.
I think the story is different, where some people show up or don't (eg. Wrex or Wreav, Kaiden or Ashley, etc) based on your choices, but even Mass Effect 2's ending was very similar.
We were not told that ME2 had 12 or 16 different endings. Yes our choices were only flavours but it was still much more than we got in ME3. It doesn't make any difference if someone died. You get same exact sidequests which they make their cameo.
Wait a second. Artemis Fowl as in...the books? I haven't read those books in years!
But back to the topic: yes, no one promised 16 endings that were not a, b and c when ME2 came out. They should've just promised colorful explosions where you get to pick the color. And oh, Space Magic
Indeed. The whole pre-release blitz and indeed the game itself kept emphasizing survival against "suicidal odds." You had to work for your happy ending it's true, but at least the option to obtain one was there.
