Think I'm about to reach Thessia on my drawn-out, half-hearted second playthrough. I'm surprised by how short and unsubstantial it's feeling, though I'm certain part of that is from having difficulty caring, knowing how things will turn out.
The thing is, this far on in the series, there are a lot of things the writers could have gotten away with. Putting aside the issue of newcomers, they don't need to worry quite as much about getting players to love the ME universe and to want more. That groundwork has already been laid. That gives them some room to branch out a little, trim some places and expand others, knowing that there are players sufficiently immersed that they will follow the story faithfully through to the end.
And that's the thing. Building on that groundwork, one thing they can't get away with is bombing the ending. At the end of a trilogy, at the end of a
freakin' war, coming full cycle, the ending should be like an anchor. You don't throw an anchor blindly into a cloud of smoke. To borrow a quote, because it sums it up so well: people will say it's about the journey and not the destination, but the journey doesn't matter when the destination is somewhere you don't want to be.
