Ending Thoughts of the Day -- Brown Edition:
Usually, I don't like reading pre-release articles. I avoided most of those for ME3. Of the things I did read, however, the information that stuck with me the most (aside from this which I failed to realise at the time was a joke ... must have skipped over the disease section ... but would have been interesting, no?) was the claim by one of the leads that the ending would make some people very happy and others angry.
There are a few things that could be added at this point: the later claim that the ending was intended to polarise (they evidently misjudged proportions here); the claim that s***ulation was the goal; the content of the endings themselves and the content of complaints with them. Putting those aside, however -- I didn't know what to think upon reading that quote the first time. Obviously I thought, I hope I'm one of those who will be very happy. I didn't like to think much about what kind of ending would produce this effect.
But now in hindsight, I'm curious: has a polarising, partly-anger-producing ending ever been the outright goal of any other franchise, or game? Is it a good goal to have the active aim of angering your customers? Is it because delivering potentially cliche but reliably loved endings just isn't edgy enough anymore? Is being edgy worth that risk? Is that kind of risk necessary to deliver a memorable experience?
I saw a discussion once, not strictly on the same topic but along the same lines, in which someone cited KotOR as an example of a twist in a story that's still remembered and loved today. And there's the thing. Without spoiling much, KotOR's light side ending was one you could without much of a stretch call cheesy or cliche, but it was worth every damn second to get there. People talk about KotOR, they don't call it out for having a cheesy or cliched ending. People could very well have speculated about the post-game events to this day if not for KotOR 2 and SWTOR following up [or, as I hear, butchering] the story. People still talk about that twist in the story. Yes, the game is old. It stood the freakin' test of time. I'm reinstalling it right now, because I need a distraction.
It stood the test of time. That was the BioWare many people fell in love with. When it's been as many years gone as it has for KotOR, what will the legacy of Mass Effect 3 be?

That's a fair point. We should probably find some sort of contingency plan should this thread die out before it's intended ToD. Some way of us regrouping on this forum instead of wandering aimlessly, unable to find everyone else. Seeing as it's getting rather slow here, I'd say now's as good a time as ever.

Nice Yahtzee reference there!
You're absolutely correct in bringing up KotOR (the sequel was developed by Obsidian and had little to nothing to do with BioWare); I still regard the major plot twist as the best in video gaming history (this coming from a guy who never played a whole heck of a lot of games). Upon first reaching it, it took me completely gormless, causing me to sit there and go all giddy and muttering "omg omg omg omg this is so cool!" The mission itself where the twist takes place was also very well-done, heightening the drama.
The thing is, that twist was properly hinted at in the context of the story through suggestive dialogue as well as other circumstances. Not only that, but it took place at an appropriate point; up until then, you had completel roughly two-thirds of the game, leaving you the entire last third to pick and role-play your desired choice for the character through to its logical conclusion.
ME3's genre-defying "edgy" (now there is a word whose meaning I regard with high disdain) Deus Ex Machina of an ending was hobnailed in at the last possible moment and made absolutely no sense, either in-context or standing on its own merits. And it shows.

To clarify, I'm not in any way calling the end of ME3 a twist. Done well, it could have been, but it defies most descriptions other than the label of deus ex machina, which I guess by its nature means it would have had no foreshadowing anyway. The KotOR mention was mainly to demonstrate that a game that ends on a possibly cliche but nonetheless reliable note can still be vastly memorable and for all the right reasons.
So yes, completely agree. The KotOR twist was handled incredibly skillfully, on top of everything else that was right with that game, which is why it's still such a damn good game to remember and play even after all this time -- heck, I only played it for the first time last year. (I reached that scene at 3am after marathoning and it made me a bit hysterical at first. Memorable by any definition of the word.) The ME3 ending? Not even close.

And unfortunately, now all we can do at this point, is wait...
We, the fans, have done almost all we conceivably can. Now we simply need to have patience, faith and hope that something, at the very least palatable comes out of this.
Its a faint hope truth be told.
Whenever I think of their extended cut DLC I think of all the awesome stuff they could add, only to eventually have to sit through the star brat all over again and thus find that no, it STILL isn't worth playing, even with all the new content if Star brat stays.
So, ultimately at this point, it really is in Biowares hands.
I will never again say something like "In Bioware we trust"
They broke that rather definitively with this. But unfortunately in Bioware we must put whatever fragile faith we may have left to hope that at least SOMETHING half way decent is salvaged from this series that could have really been great.

In his review of Dragon Age II, Yahtzee compared it to the ME series by saying that a player could unfocus their eyes and pretend that they were "playing Mass Effect Brown Edition." This was in reference to the departure in dialogue presentation made by DA2 from DA:O, something which I liked and appreciated, as I have said on many occasions that fully-voiced narration is the wave of the future for RPGs of all stripes (whether they be traditiona, action-RPGs, or what have you; the days of the silent protagonist are nearly over).
Edit: @ ld1449:
I'll be waiting right beside you, mate, however my faith in BioWare has taken more severe a hit and will be even slower to recover. This assumes that the Extended Cut will do much extending, something which I doubt very strongly. I'm prepared to be surprised and amazed, but I'm waiting for habeus corpus to kick in.
That said, I'll prolly just watch the new footage on YouTube.
