I didn't start playing Mass Effect until I got my new computer almost a year and half ago. I was eager to play both Mass Effect 1, and Dragon Age: Origins. I started both, but I got more into Dragon Age: Origins, so I finished that first. Just as I finished the game, Dragon Age 2 came out. So naturally I just started playing that. But that game was disappointing and unfulfilling enough that I was a wasn't motivated enough to start playing another Bioware game.
After a couple of months of playing through some other RPGs, I finally got around to playing Mass Effect again, and damn it was awesome. Finished it, and started Mass Effect 2. Didn't quite love it as much, but it was a solid game in its own right. I didn't even complete a second playthrough of either, because Mass Effect 3 was supposed to be coming out later in the year, and I would rather have finished my original character's story before starting a new one. I played with that character making some morally ambiguous decisions, but all the ones I thought were for the better of the universe and such. So I wanted to have that story fresh in my mind when I started ME3.
Every character that followed was going to have like an "alternate universe" type story. Well ME3 finally came out after being delayed... and damn I was disappointed. There was no point in preserving that character I had, because nothing she did mattered anyways. What the hell is the point of creating all these characters with variable story points if they all end up with the exact same story anyways. My character was a paragade (or whatever it is people call it), but the future paragon, and future renegade characters I was ready to create would all have to sit through the exact same ME3 story.
And the ending is so awful, that I can't bother to start ME1 over again anyways. There's no point of going through it, knowing that it was working towards no end. The events in the game became meaningless, and the actions I was taking were futile. That's the effect the ending has on the series. It renders absolutely everything before it utterly useless. So why bother?
Mass Effect 1 is/was my favourite game I have ever played, and I can't really forgive ME3 for somehow ruining that. I mean, that was the least of my worries when I started playing the game. Who thought it could be so awful that it was reverberate back and destroy the rest of the franchise?
That is why ME3 is far and beyond the single most disappointing video game I've ever played. Not the worst game I've ever played obviously, but it was so far removed from the most modest of my expectations.
edit: I realize this is a bit late, but the power in my apartment was cut, and I couldn't post this an hour ago.
I agree. What also irks me is how some decisions were ret-conned outside of the game, like Anderson stepping down and allowing Udina to take his place. I also did not appreciate Kai Leng the Cyborg Ninja hopping about. I also read that he was in the books, but honestly, it should not be required to read the books to find learn about specific characters.<_<
