Checking in once again. Still not playing ME. Just saw the review in Game Informer that gave ME3 a 10 and completely dismissed the complaints of the many dissatisfied gamers.
Joe Juba writes in the "second opinion" review, "Don't be dismayed by some users' complaints about the ending; I've been a hardcore fan of Mass Effect from the beginning, and I am completely satisfied with the conclusion..."
I have to disagree with Mr. Juba. I am still completely dissatisfied with the ending.
I read that too. I was floored. It's not possible to be completely satisfied with the ending unless you're OK with an ending that has nothing to do with the game you just played, makes no sense from a writing standpoint, and then tells you to continue playing, more DLC is on the way.
I think the reason ME3 got such stellar reviewes was because fo the review process in general. There's a great webshow called Extra Credits that went into this subject. Basicly, the problem with the majority of game reviewers is that they're grading on technical standpoints and less on actual story. For example, when you read the review of a movie, the story, actors, direction, and overall performance are given much more emphasis. In a videogame review, simply having the game functioning properly means that the game is well on its way to reciving a good score. Not everyone follows this, mind you. I know for a fact that Gamesradar doesn't follow this style, which is one of the reasons why I trust their reviews over others. Still, most reviewers don't review the story and art direction as much as they do the technical aspects, which is why you see review scores given to games that, while functional in a technical sense, suck in other areas.
