Definitely, just give him the excuse my mom uses - "They're more intuitive."Kyria Nyriese wrote...

Oh I'm very familiar with that problem lol. That best thing for my that my dad has done recently is that he's converted to Macs so I can sit back as say I know nothing about them so I'm not asked to fix them anymore!
Hmmm there's a thought when I get him his next computer...

That's a shame since most IT degrees don't add anything to your technical ability, it just seems to be the words on the CV - but then that might just be the UK.

Here too. My recruiters keep telling me that works experience is more important and that they are pretty much ignoring certs. Something about more people with certs only knowing how to pass exams, not do the job.
Sad but true, I was in recruitment before my hubby and I set up our own IT mob and the problem is that there are quite a few companies in the UK and India that are offering "guaranteed passes" for their courses. They're doing it with some of the high level certs as well which is very annoying. Regardless the certs give you a good grounding but until you've had hands on experience implementing it and being faced with weird issues you don't see in the training it's a bit hard to say that you're experienced in it if that makes sense? We had to do a migration recently and the tools we had to use just didn't do what they were supposed to do so while I was busy banging my head on the desk in frustration and yelling as Symantec and Quest my better half was able to come up with ways of fixing the issues only because he's been doing this for so long.Ohpus wrote...

That's weird that they're saying that. Obviously I can't speak for the US but most companies in the UK are pretty flexible on that one if it's counterbalanced with certs and experience, unless there's a specific reason they want a degree. Sorry if you already mentioned it but what is your area of expertise?Kyria Nyriese wrote...

My recruiters have told me the same thing, however, knowing a bunch of engineers spread across most of the companies I would be considering, and having them putting me before their managers, I get the, you don't have a degree, we don't want you. Which really stinks, as I had said school is kicking my butt right now.

That's bizarre! No one in their right mind should pay more for someone with a degree than someone who has a CCNP or CCIE. Well if you ever move to the UK let me know because all the people I know in IT here understand that the experience working with the products is invaluable.Kyria Nyriese wrote...

Microsoft/Cisco support and implementation. From what one of my friends told me, was that they get more money for degrees, no matter what it is in, than they do for experience, and to keep their budget up they only hire degrees. No matter what the degree is in (this friend has a degree in biology).
