Well aside from keeping the continuity of the character name, in ME2 etc she's not technically working for the Alliance. But you're right s/he deserves a serious promotion!!TamiBx wrote...

I was sitting here thinking: why hasn't Shepard been promoted? I mean, everyone was promoted but Shepard...was it because Bioware wanted to keep Shepard "Commander Shepard" and not something else?

There is a thread dedicated to it, suffice to say it's a heated discussion, the author is basically telling us we are not bright enough to get it, so I'm taking a course in astrobiology to get it.chmarr wrote...

A well thought editorial, but it is completely biased and also has bought into every negative thing said about us (like lots of people wanting their charity money back, which was proven to be false). The fact he has bought into every negative story about us makes me mourn the loss of impartial media.

Yeah, to be honest, Commander Shepard has had so many court martialable offences and direct insubordination it's a miracle they're not Ensign Shepard

This is something else that bothered me about ME 3, according to what we get at the beginning of the game, Shepard has not been court martialed, I would say most likely s/he has been through an Admiral's mast, which, according to the UCMJ - of which I see no reference to it having been removed - the most that could happen would be Shepard dropped to Ensign, confined to quarters for not more than 30 days and pay reduction of 50% for two months, restriction for not more than 60 days. While they could have relieved Shepard of duty (ie grounded him/her and then again only for at most 60 days) they could not have stripped him/her of rank. Only a full court martial can do that, which was established in the game had not happened.

What, you don't like getting lectured for 20 minutes about how you were to stupid to understand the ending? lol. I said the same thing when it was posted here yesterday, but the article is a joke. It makes many assumptions, and just makes even more stuff about the game to fit it's slanted angle. That anyone can take it's theoy at face value is laughable.Phoenix NL wrote...

OK, so I try and do everything right for 3 games ME 1 thru 3 because it all counts--right? I get all the alliances, all the funding, galactic readiness at 100%, promote something like 20 N-7 level 20s, and so I figure I'm going to get the best ending possible... and the ending sucked! I want to see an ending with Shepard on a beach looking up at 2 moons with Liara in a bikini by his side and they're sipping pina coladas or something. Man, I am profoundly disappointed with the ending(s)!

No worries haha,
Just to clarify, UCMJ is a US Military thing.
Canadian Military, of which I see quite a bit of parallels (which makes sense being as Bioware's in Edmonton which is a hub for the Canadian Air Force) with Mass Effect. Up here you can get dismissed for disconduct, and dismissed with disgrace for disconduct.. I'm pretty sure the first one only needs the equivalent of an admiral's mast with no appeal, where as the second requires a full court martial. (Again, not entirely sure on that once again so someone correct me if I'm wrong).
Off topic related fact - Canada can do fully electronic webcammed court martials, they've got a courtroom in Gatineau, Quebec that's fully outfitted to try/convict someone in Afghanistan (if we were still there). Shepard wouldn't have to return to earth to get Court Martialled 150 years from now I would almost guarantee, just holo in..etc

I talked about this article a few days ago. I'm not gonna re-write everything I said, but this was the gist of it;
I stopped reading once he got to the Kardashev Scale. This theory has no place in an argument. It is meaningless, we have no knowledge of what an advanced civilization would be like, so it is completely made up. In layman's terms, it's Science Fiction.
If you are talking about Astrobiology, and you bring up this theory to back your claim, you've already lost. This theory is completely made up. It holds no merit in any kind of discussion, and quite frankly should be wiped from existence. I could claim that there is a civilization in the stars, and they use unicorn horn dust to power their space winnebagos, and my theory would be just as relevant as the Kardashev Scale.
He's using Science Fiction as fact to back up Science Fiction. He loses.

Thanks for the link chmarr!
I'll be honest, the amount of research that's gone into the article is astounding, I'd started reading it the other night, and never actually finished. My main problem with it is, as said by Laterali, that a lot of the comparison scales/benchmarks he uses are completely theoretical to start with. The Kardashev scale, though theorized by a Russian Cosmonaut, really has no frame of reference, it's like a medievil civillization trying to catagorize a modern day space-faring one. Type II and III are so far out as to be incomprehensible, they'd just appear as Space Magic
It's a good read though, obviously well thought out by the author and I don't have nearly enough time to go through each of his chapters and offer commentary/rebuttal to them. I agreed with a few of his statements being plausible, but the reality of the situation is that Bioware tried to push the game out for EA's March 31st FYE and so cut corners.. I guarantee if you asked half of the Bioware statff what the Kardashev scale was, or any of the writers for that matter, you might find one or two that actually did... there was no grand artistic vision here, this was just a "This ending is cool" "We don't have enough time to do it, so lets do Option B" "Option B is going to be tight, let's reuse stuff, use stock photos, cut down on cutscenes and we might make it" situation. As much as I usually argue the opposite, in this case we're giving Bioware too much credit in that article lol.
