The first two books were okay, but the third one went a bit downhill in my opinion; it wasn't what I'd call "necessary" to the lore, what have you. Kai Leng was a decently-written villain, but he was a two-point-five dimensional creature (a little flat). Definitely better than the one-dimensional hatchet-man we got in the ending, though.

Do the books feature Shepard as the protagonist then? That would be weird for me to read since I'm assuming Shepard would be a guy.
I wasn't too keen on Kai Leng as a main baddie in ME 3, so I really hope the Extended DLC includes more Harbinger. Even if it's just to add a few taunts while you're running to the beam. He's too good a villain to be left with the silent treatment.
Come to think of it, if there are more cinematics, I hope they include some current and former squad mates acting Bad*ssfully. Especially Garrus.
No, Shepard is only ever mentioned (and certainly not in
Revelation).
Like everyone else here, I definitely missed Harbinger's sheer
presence in the game; sure, he's billed as the Reaper that tags you with the lazor, but that's only ever inferred. I would have
LOVED a final boss fight in which you fight a Reaper
capital ship on foot! That could have been
the most epic boss encounter in the history of gaming, and they blew it!
You're right, also, that they should include the squadmates in the final run mission. There's no way any sane military organization would send ONE three-being team of specialists in to take command of an assault like that; they should've done like they did in ME2 and divide Shep's team up into three forces, you pick the best leaders, and whatnot (I could see Javik and Garrus being the obvious choices for "most appropriate" fire team leaders, as in if you don't pick them one of the members dies or is injured or whatever). The London mission was done "fair to midland," but like the end boss it could've been so much
bigger!
