Mine do the same because "Leda and the Swan" is not on our set text list. I'm outraged by this, not only is it considered his masterpiece, it's a damn good poem to boot. But maybe it requires too much calssical knowledge to be exam viable.

Similar construction to German and Swedish, is it not? Man-passive is what we called it. When the subject is only formal, and there just for the syntax. A dummy-subject if you will.
