Good analogy, however there is one problem with it.... it has made me hungry!
I'm guessing that now would not be a good time to tell you I had a galette with swiss cheese, prosciutto and sundried tomatoes, and a crepe with nutella slathered all the way through it for dinner last night, right?
So we can't get the ending we want after all?

People call JRPGs linear. Yet the one I just finished, Devil Survivor: Overclocked, had more endings than ME3, they were more varied as well.
It's sad that one of the few Western RPGs that I loved, that is also the only shooter that I have ever loved couldn't have a half decent ending... It's been weeks and weeks and I still can't get over it...
This has been a word from the resident JRPG nut.

40% of players bought From Ashes. EA declares "Great Justice". Not sure if that includes CE owners. Somehow this is a proof of the success of Day 1 DLC? That 40% of people bought a D1 DLC on the MOST ANTICIPATED GAME OF THE YEAR?

Ah yes, I read something like that. So in the future they will cut much more content from the game and sell it as DLC.

Well let's say that 400,000 people bought From Ashes. That's 4 millions dollars they made on something that didn't cost them extra to make, it was already made, they just cut it from the game and sold it as separate.
I'd say that's a pretty big success right there. 4 million dollars pure profit.
And that's only 40 percent of 1 million sales, last I checked it was closer to 2 million.

Article about Witcher 2, an interview with CDProjekt Red's CEO, and the last paragraph of the article he discusses the backlash of ME3. It's more a pitch for his own game but...
"what did you think about the very vocal fan reaction to the ending of Mass Effect 3?RPGs are games you invest a lot of your time into. They
become part of your life for quite a while. During this time you highly
identify yourself with the character you play, so if suddenly, after
100+ of hours and few instalments of the series you find out that
whatever you did throughout this whole time, whatever choices you made,
the end is the same, well, I think that disappointment is
understandable. It clearly shows that gamers expect, that their choices
in the RPGs they play are really meaningful – and that’s what both the
Witcher and the Witcher 2 are about.
We actually went so far in Witcher 2 that,
depending on the player’s choice in Chapter One there are two totally
different versions of Chapter Two, two different locations and two
different storylines. To see both, you have to play the game twice. On
top of that the game has 16 different endings depending on gamers
choices throughout the whole game. There are decisions and there the
consequences and you see it from the beginning to the end of both
Witchers."
CD Projekt gave the multiple endings promised, and 2 completely seperate storylines depending on how you decided you wanted it to go.
Bioware manages to fail not only in giving divergnet stories with seperate causes and missions, but it doesn't even let you approach the same stories and missions from a different angle (Like letting you side with Cerberus).
Hell there's not a single mission in the game that can't be played by every player in every playthrough they do. What the hell is that? It's linear as hell. It's something you find in a FPS, not a Western RPG. For them, the idea of programming something that it's possible a player cannot see is just crazy talk. The entire game was designed to look polished for a single Paragon playthrough. That's it. It's too bad if you wanted the story to exist differently because of your galaxy altering decisions in the past.
It's like the guys who shortcutted ME3 were hoping that no one who played the Single player would try it more than once. Maybe that's why the ending is the way it is (speculation!). Or maybe they were genuinely hoping that no one would even care still, which is probably more sad.

I think their creativity reached its end. They've used the same plot for every single one of their games all the way back to Baldur's Gate with very little deviation from the path. The only difference is the backdrop. They have great character writers, but the people creating the main plot theme are one trick ponies.
