So we can't get the ending we want after all?

Its possible. It would be a smart move on EA/BioWare's move, if they want to perserve the game as much as possible. The Free Jaffa wrote...
This is farfetched, I'm sure...
But they did say there are six endings, right? Testers are counting seven. What we're all counting are minor variables to each ending. Now others have said, though unlikely, that could have Bioware locked these endings by changing file names and directories. They didn't want all the endings spoiled.
Couldn't this patch, instead of adding content, unlock and rearrange files? I don't believe it, but that seems likely. They've recently stated that there are 6 different endings. But again, we count "7". Everyone says they are really three with different variables...so...

Explain to me how this would be considered smart. I'm tired of pointing out what an awful decision that is...I'd like to hear how people can defend it as a smart move.

Oh yes it will be. I'm betting the LI forums will be the first to burn.
Jackal on the NOSE. Because these are the people who are most emotionally invested in the outcome. I won't be able to play the game until next weekend but to find out first how it ends I'm just going to watch the Ashley forum and wait for the explosion - or the joy, if it turns out this is a huge misinformation campaign. So I'll know ahead of time whether or not I will be needing to return my collector's edition.
I hate being right about something so bad, because as a fan of ME, I know how much I care about the characters. Its a real bummer to see other people go through the same thing.

The concept of it is smart at least in my eyes (then again, I may not have all the factors that go into such a process and such). The execution? If BioWare really did do it, then it's pretty bad considering how many fans are pissed off and cancelling the pre-orders.GBGriffin wrote...

There's a thread in the discussion group about the five stages of Mass Effect denial. I plan to have that ready and Ctrl+V the hell out of it.

The best ending is now get Wrex and Captain Kirahee killed in ME1 and pick your favourite character - Ashely or Kaiden to get killed, get as many of Shepard's crew killed in Mass Effect 2 by ignoring sidequests, kill the council. Don't reprogam the Geth in ME2.
Destroy the cure, destroy and shoot anyone you come accross to spare them this horrible fate. Ignore side quests and skrew up major story choices, go in with the lowest possible war assets you can so that as many people will be left on their homeworld as possible and ignore sidequests.
Pick the destroy ending so that the survivors won't be forced against their will to become something they don't want to be and hope for the best / let someone else deal with the AI singularity problem in the future. Hopefully the Normandy crew will all mostly die from the crash.
You'll still get that same destroy ending but Earth will be devestated but at least it'll be humane
The funniest part about all this? Even if you let the galaxy burn with something like this, the Reapers are still stopped. It's just..insanely WTF funny to me.

Are we sure that this will be happening? Seems kind of less epic as potrayed
There's what been presented as fact, and then there are people still clinging to the hope based on either the Prima strategy guide or the idea that BioWare wouldn't "do this".
At this stage, it's really down to what you choose to believe. You can choose to believe the files from the game itself, or choose to believe the developers, Prima, and your own gut that the series just "has" to end some other way.

to me it makes no sense to build a race of all-powerful sentient machines and not put in a way to shut them down if they get loco.

Anyone care to wager their bets on which character thread will burn in which order?
I think ash and kaiden's been plenty spoiled already...not sure about others.
Gears you suck because the order your speculated is exactly the order I would have called it.
Ithurtz - I follow the Ash forums a lot and I can guarantee you no one there is expecting a different-colored-rocks ending. They all can't wait to live happily ever after. There are going to be TEARS. I'll say it again: the downside of raising expectations is that the fall to reality is farther and harder. I can't wait to read the first official PR response to all this. Wonder if it could be anything other than "you don't get it, it's art." If they try "it's the journey not the destination," that immediately admits defeat on the destination.

Whatever they say if it is really this bad (yes, I am still in a state of denial partially), they can't say anything that makes the fans forgive them. Only free DLC with new endings might make people then a bit happy again, charged DLC will just make a lot of people explode all over again then.

I've been in the Tali thread, they seem relieved by the fact that she can effectively be saved by non-recruitment. I think the Liaramancers are going to have the hardest time.
Daft good intel - but I wonder if it's like with Ashley where in order to "save" them and have them not be on the normandy, you need to tell them to not be on the normandy which ends the romance. Saving her by keeping her off the ship, but having the romance continue, will be a MUCH less harsh situation than the only way to save them is through being forced to break up with them.

Those are the ones I feel the most for. I'm attached to the characters to the point the ending will hurt. But these people are massive fans of each character, they are going to be absolutely heart broken.
Little do they know the cruel and punishing trap Bioware has set for them. The irony is the game did the same to you as the reapers did.
Presented you with a set of paths and characters to be reliant on to make it easier to hurt you at the end.
