R-i-g-h-t - the earth virtually blown to hell, the Galaxy driven back into relay dark ages killing more billions, every race that sent their warriors stranded from family, loved ones, and their children - billions upon billion on earth wiped out with food/transportaion/and a viable civilization blown away. Yeah, that does seem like goofy.Efesell wrote...

NO! Sheppard deserves to live with his friends, his crew, and his L1. He's already suffered enough. Killed once, his crew taken from him, his friends turned their backs on him, the council treating him as a virtual traitor, everything he did treated as madness by the Alliance and by the Council, forced into killing 300,000 plus, his second crew taken from him, jailed, his ship taken AGAIN - Heck if anyone deserves a friggen break its Sheppard. HE put brought the galaxy together to fight this threat and its just about time those guys (rest of Galaxy) pulled their own damn weight!
The fact that he potentially survives this entire mess sane is more than what would nornally be expected.
The notion of him living happily ever after just seems goofy.
Goofy is the idiot Reaper story. The Chritmas Tree solution kiss your butt goodbye - bye, bye NOrmany and crew hope you all starve well and inbreed - man, talk about goofy! This is IT!

Tears. Of rage.
I'm kicking him out of the Normandy as soon as I can.
I'd rather he died fighting on Earth alongside his fellow turians than starving to death on a random planet.

Well if that wasn't enough to expect a movie hero/happy ending how about ME2's final mission. Build up all this hype about it being a suicide mission or a one way trip, and you can walk out of it with everyone, no mandatory casualties.Heathen Pride wrote...

Shepard was spaced, suffocated, burnt up in the atmosphere to the point of looking like a burnt pot roast, impacted a planet and was still able to be resurrected. I think ME had already gone well past "goofy" with the start of ME2 so a happy ending is certainly a reasonable expectation.

Wow, originality at its finest.
Yeah, I don't even know what to respond to this... when exactly was the moment when Baldur's Gate 2 Bioware turned into Now Bioware?
Is it just EA that is to blame?
I'm not so sure that backdrop a rip off... There are only so many things an artist can do with a composition. The elements are very simple elements in a very simple arrangement: blue/white, snowy field, trees, moon. Maybe the painter came up with a similar image independently. That sort of thing happens surprisingly often. Or maybe the artist used that wallpaper at one point and it got buried in their subconscious and influenced the epilogue scene without his/her conscious awareness. Or maybe it was a more intentional influence. Hard to know for sure.

Adds to the tragedy, but doens't make the ending itself any worse.
I can actually appreciate including moments like this knowing that things actually ARE about to get real bad.

Commander Shepard can have multiple backgrounds and ideological alignments, you can't make such a generalising comment on how another player's Shepard could potentially react.
If these endings *are* to your liking, I'm trully happy for you, at least somebody will get their not only money's worth, but also the feeling that the time invested into the trilogy wasn't for naught.
But these endings, although apropriate for some of my Shepards -I'll admit to that- don't exactly fit with the kind of "hope" instilled from ME1 and ME2, the latter which actually gave the players the option to not only have their squadmates all come out alive, but also the Normandy's crew.
In Mass Effect 3, I didn't expect for everything to stay the same sans the Reapers themselves; rather, I was expecting more "trade offs": namely, in order to get Shepard and the Normandy's crew safe and sound, I'd have to sacrifice Earth, or the Relays, or both. Inversely, by sacrifing Shepard and the Normandy, I expected to be able to save Earth and most of the current status quo of the Galaxy. I expected not a "perfect, happy-happy" ending, but several shades of grey/glass half-full.
As it stands now, I see the glass only a quarter-full since, yes, the Reapers are gone, but that's almost all we really won.
It definitely wasn't how I wanted to bid my farewell to this IP which I invested so much time and enthusiasm onto.

This might explain it:
Writers:
"ME1
Drew Karpyshyn (lead writer) - went to Bioware Austin sometime during
ME2's development; he quit Bioware on Feb. 15, 2012, and left the video
game industry
Chris L'Etoile - quit Bioware in 2008 to go to ZeniMax Online (the parent company of Bethesda)
Luke Kristjanson - moved to Dragon Age team
Patrick Weekes - still writes for Mass Effect games
Mac Walters - still writes for Mass Effect series, currently lead writer as of ME2
ME2 (In addition to those listed above, ME2 has these writers on the credits):
Malcolm Azania - left Bioware for Maxis
Chris Hepler- Unknown
Brian Kindregan - left Bioware for Blizzard
Jay Turner - Unknown
Therefore of all the original ME1 writers, only 2 remain (Patrick Weekes
and Mac Walters). And Patrick Weekes didn't even do much for ME1."

I'm guessing a writer higher up on the food chain wrote the "interesting" ending and character-specific writers wrote the tender, interpersonal scenes.

The very fact that your first page google image search has multiple similar winter with planet backdrop pictures shows it's a common enough motif for invoking a particular mood. Slagging the similiarities it shares with the fmv is like slagging the game for having spaceships because spaceships are way too common in science fiction.Goose1004 wrote...

It's pretty interesting actually. The fact that they need to bring up how "good" the ending is in every interview gives me the impression that they feel quite insecure about it.
