I don't care that an ending is SAD , if it WORKS. But after years of being promised control and choice, the realization that NOTHING MATTERED in the end is even worse than a sad ending. Would I pick a SAD ending in ME3? Sure. But I'd like to try the other ones as well --- IF THEY EXISTED!
All of this, on top of the ME3 writing team basically ripping apart what made the franchise, and its main threat, so great in the first place.
There's nothing satisfactory about this.
Nothing.
So many bad decisions.
So much disappointment.
QFT, friend.
Hell, add Red Dead Redemption there. Glorious end for John. Right up until the last bullet, Rockstar gave us control.
Granted, there was only one way for that game and that shootout to end, but RDR was never marketed as a game about choice. From the start you knew RDR was John's story, not
your story.
If Rockstar said we could build our gang, develop our resources, spread our influence to make or ruin New Austin -- and then gave us the fatal shootout regardless of everything else we did or tried to do, then I would have been furious. But they didn't. RDR had no illusion of choice, you were figuratively and literally railroaded from one plot point to the next, and so when the hero loses everything in the end it's painful -- it's bitter -- it makes you hurt -- but it's acceptable because at no point did you believe you could effect its outcome.
Then you have Mass Effect that does the exact opposite: save the whole of the Rachni or make them extinct, undo the genophage or destroy tainted research, reporgram an army of geth or destroy them, give Cerberus a door into the Reaper's mind or shut that door completey. Each of those is a galaxy shifting decision; a massive choice with huge implications that should create violently different outcomes -- and yet all those choices essentially culminate in adding zeroes to a Galactic Readiness figure that itself has little effect on the ultimate outcome. And then there is only one ultimate outcome.
This is a pretty big disappointment. My only consolation is that Halo 4 is coming with its requisite bullet porn and the new Assassin's Creed looks interesting.
