Sure, every 50,000 years we deal with this horrendous galactic genocide, but at least between that time we get to picture more civilizations develop and spread throughout the galaxy. As far as "hope" goes, we would still be left to ponder whether the next cycle would be able to achieve victory. The pseudo-victory we're left with really makes it seem terribly unlikely that an intergalactic government would ever re-emerge. I think that's one of the most powerful messages that gets people riled up; the idea that the galaxy just became a dreary, dark, and lonely place.

Kinda a sad message.

Shepard did the impossible. He was the greatest man who ever lived anywhere... and in the end, even HIS choices were meaningless.

In all seriousnes, I think I might actually have a hard time getting to sleep after seeing the ending. 
PS: I'm 28

Sad as it is, I know what you feel. I finished ME3 Thursday evening. Since that moment, I've done virtually nothing but read these forums. It's all I can do right now. I can't go back to play ME3, or even ME1 or ME2 for that matter. I put in such an emotional investment and never got an outlet for it in the game, so I really can't enjoy any other video game at the moment. Really, I never thought of myself doing something so.. "nerdy". I never thought I would admit to people that I felt physically worse after finishing a video game, I never thought any game could affect me like this.
And here I am. Finding what solace I can in sharing my experience with so many other people, hoping with all my might that Bioware will come through.

It all may be just bits of data on a hard drive, but if you spend enough time with it you get attached just like anything else in the world. I know the feeling bout the forum thing. I usually never stroll into forums. After beating it Wedneday i was so pissed i had to find some kind of outlet. Ive got 5 other shepards waiting for a decent ending so they can play through. Time will tell if something good comes out of it.

Was a super happy ending really going to happen? Probably not, but I think many of us were ready for that.

What happened is that we, as the players, as the people who WERE Shepard, recieved NO closure at all. That was not an ending. 

I agree, 3 days since I finished and I think I may actually be more worked up about it now then I was when I finished the game.

To prove how bad the ending is Bioware, Qurian skin color in multiplayer does not bother me. Please fix the ending before that.

The funny thing is: There was a really funny parody by gameinformer on the lines of "What would Mass effect be like if George Lukas made it" - I laughed my ass off about it. Well, we now know that he would at least have made the ending better than Bioware did. Creepy really, especially since we know that Bioware can do so much better - and did until the last 15 minutes of the game at least :S.

Well, I started to write my post for three times, just to delete it in the end.
I have to say that the endings are - in a way - not that bad at all. From something like a metaphysical point of view. But, honestly, they are making logically absolutely no sense.
I found this thread because I searched for an explanaiton for the end. And now I think, there is no explanaiton at all.
Just one thing I am thinking about:
The guardian is a machine VI/KI - remember the difference - and he/she/it wants extinction of organic races, because they would in all cases end up fighting other synthetic life?
This is strange, why should a machine do exactly this? Why does it not kill everything organic at once?
Maybe the Citadel etc. were built by another species that faced war with synthetic life in a far past.
But, **** PLEASE...
Well, I always thought shepard has to die at the end, but no epilouge at all?

Man, I was just SO SHOCKED. The game was just so good; I had full faith the ending would rock. I looked at all of them, then, in quick succession, and was like, seriously, what?! Days later, I'm still in shock.

Shock really was the first feeling, for about 20 minutes after finishing. I've never had my emotions switched under me so quickly. I did everything in my power not to spoil the game for myself, and I was so utterly ready for a fantastic ending to fantastic series... and then bam. If I recall correctly, I didn't feel sad at first, nor did I feel angry. I felt just shocked. Emotionless. Empty. It took me a whole hour to realize I wasn't just confused, I didn't just misunderstand things, it really was this horrible.

This fleet game we play is showing something very nicely: the assembling of war assets didn't suck. No in fact we liked it! The game in itself didn't suck. The story didn't suck!

But the ending (let's face it: There is ONLY ONE ending with small variations) is hollow and empty.
