Okay, after about three hours of post reading (yeah get a life, I know) I've come to three main actualizations about Mass Effect's ending.
Before I go into these, I'd first like to point you all in the directions of two posters who I thought captured the feelings of the community best (and again this is my opinion, you're all entitled to your own): Beras (pg. 600), and I can't remember the name, but he had a really long post on page 597. Kudos to you two, I have to say it's really captured my thoughts and sentiments. Also I made the exact same choices Beras did, but I digress.
Actualization No. 1: BioWare did not actually know how to end the series. When I first saw the end to my favorite game, series, and story of all time I was devastated not at the (spoiler) death, or assimilation of Commander Shepard, which was depressing and very emotional for me, but at how BioWare just shoved three endings that made no sense down our throats. What does this have to do with BW not knowing how to end it you say. Well if you think about how BioWare had masterfully ended each game, with ME 1's dramatic destruction of Sovereign, and ME 2's heroic conquering of the Collectors, and then we have ME 3's ridiculously annoying little kid who's god or some ****, which makes no sense. But honestly people, how is BioWare supposed to know what ending would be appropriate amongst the epicness of the previous games' endings? It's not like they could poll everyone and say "Hey Shepard's boned, what are your thoughts?" No, that would just make people barrage them with a gazillion ending ideas, all of which would ****** off a ton of people no doubt.
Actualization No. 2: The Ending is far too final. As I'm sure you're all thinking as I write this "no duh, it's the end of the series." I'd like to point your attention to the (for lack of a better word) promise made by some Mass Effect director, that Shepard's story is finished, but not Mass Effect Galaxy's. Which led me to believe that yes Shepard may not be the next protagonist, but at the very least you can see his actions throughout later games. But with the destruction of the Mass Effect Generators, there is not Mass Effect Galaxy, it would take months if not years to travel to where you needed to be, and can you imagine how lame that would be if you were confined to one system, dealing with one races problems? It would suck. So how in the world are we going to have a good Mass Effect game after 3, if there is no way to move around? sure they may have studied the Mass Effect Generators, but if they had wouldn't the ships be fasters. Again I digress, sorry all.
Actualization No. 3: (I know we're all victims here, and this is probably hypocritical but f it): Talk is cheap. I've seen this before, where people just sat around an wrote things about what was wrong with certain aspects of something (look at the council, and for a better real world example, look at Congress) nothing will get done without some kind of action on our part. So for all of you Mass Effect Fans that have been a core believer from the start (or like me, were forced to start with ME 2 cause of Play Station) please sign the petition to change the Mass Effect Ending, the address is :
http://social.biowar...2&poll_id=29101 we need your help to stop the rEApers, Commander Shepard needs your help soldiers (sorry, too good to pass up).
And just because I thought it needs saying, I was pissed at BioWare for snuffing ME 2 characters (i.e. my girl Miranda) but after playing through all but the end of ME 3, and witnessing the emotion, determination, hopelessness, bravery, and sheer badassness of the story, I realize that ME 3 is a very good game, but without a proper ending, it'll only be "very good", never reaching the pinnacle of storytelling and action I know the game's capable of. So anyone whose willing to do something about this, please contact BioWare, sign the petition, do something, anything to help fix the ending to the greatest franchise of all time.
