So we can't get the ending we want after all?

I dont really believe they are "bad" endings. Either way you stop the reapers which was the point. Life goes on proven in the epilogue. Shepard can live proven in the secret ending. Just because you don't ride off into the sunset doesnt make it a bad ending. Maybe most people just don't understand it. Everyone just wants to make wild accusations and theorys. i think they have a plan and if it turns out to be awesome then a lot of people are gonna look like jackasses.
Millions of people die, two of your team and your entire crew are trapped on one of the billions of planets, you're dead, galactic community is utterly destroyed, some races are as good as extinct and all the races you have are trapped in the local cluster (which is too far out of range of any other system to use FTL) and will all die off like the Drell would have.
Not really a good ending when you look at it. Look into the math, and it's barely even a victory, since only the few people who stayed behind and weren't killed of by the reapers (the few quarians who stayed on Rannoch and the Krogans on Tuchanka) would survive, and even they wouldn't last very long. Quarians having no support to create safe areas on their land and the krogans having no supplies due to the sheer damage done to their world (not enough land for crops. Ironically, the opposite problem the quarians would have).

I honestly don't see why so many people hate the ending of this game... In my eyes, it was a master piece. Shepard gets nearly vaped by Harbinger, and is lucky to be alive. His other squadmates were picked up by the Normandy so they can assit in the battle (how else can you explain them getting on the Normandy for the final cinematic). Shepard wakes up at an un-known time after being nearly vaped, and gets to the citadel, has a BRILLIANTLY written scene with the Illusive man and Anderson. Shep is forced to shoot his friend, and you then have the oppotunity to kill the Illusive man before he kills Anderson.
The Crucible is linked to the Citadel, and Shepard talks to a Synthetic, who believes the only way to save Organics is by killing advanced synthetic and organic races. Think about that. The Synthetic that controls the reapers, is killing organics, just like he said all advanced synthetics do. I just love that fulfillment right there.
Now you have a choice, and you HAVE to choose. Because, this is the ONLY way to beat the reapers. You can not defeat the repears conventionally. They outnumber everyone, even combined, it is clear that they grealy out number every other fleet. They have to work so hard just to kill 1 reaper, let alone thousands. There is no way, even combined, that galatic forces can beat the reapers. It can not be done, the races are just fighting back JUST hard enough to buy time for Shepard to find a way to beat them. Is this a plot device? Yes. Does it make sense? Yeah (except for synthesis, that one really doesn't make sense). Both the Paragon and Renegade options are failsafes, probably put in place by the original race that made the reapers, in case the catalyst (or AI controlling the reapers) went out of control, which it obviously did.
So you make your choice, and you have to live with the consequences. Now, here's my thinking. The Normandy was NOT in a mass relay when the explosion hti it. To me, it looked like it was in FTL. And I am sure someone will eventually find the Normandy. No matter which option you pick, every race has PLENTY of FTL capable ships. The destruction of the mass relays isn't an apocalypse, it's merely the destruction of a technology made to direct the growth of various species so the Reapers could predict the level of technology they would have to deal with. Life will go on in the galaxy. The Normandy will eventually be found. There are only so many places they could be realtive to earth if they used FTL. And, if Shepard lives, (which he does if you have a high enough EMS), you can be certain he will not rest till he finds the Normandy.
And this ending doesn't contradict ME1. I have heard some people complain that if the Catalyst is the citadel, then why would Sovereign need to be there. Simple, the catalyst was dormant. The Catalyst probably only activates if there is a problem and the Reapers need guidance on what to do. It's pretty clear that the reapers are self sufficient. They know their orders. They don't need to be controlled every second of everyday. So, the crucible docking to the Citadel activated the Catalyst, AND altered it's programming, allowing Shepard to activate its failsafes with out confrontation.
Forgive any spelling mistakes, I just can't comprehend why people hate this ending so much. This isn't supposed to be a happy ending, there isn't suppose to be one. The Galaxy as we know it just about came to an end. There is no happy way to end a somber story like that. But there is HOPE. The civilizations CAN rebuild with FTL. It will just take a lot longer since they don't have mass relays. Shepard will find the Normandy again. The Reapers, one way or another, will no longer threaten the galaxy.
That's how I view this ending.
I like you...^ this
The scene with TIM was all right, I suppose, if we ignore the fact that a maxed Paragon could not pull off the persuation options. So far so good.
The problem with the final choice is that the options you're given are essentially all the same. On a galactic scale, no matter which you choose, the consequences are largely identical--except that you have the chance to kill EDI and the geth along with stopping the war (which would pretty much invalidate everything you've been doing all game long).
Further, a lot of this argumentation is based on the assumption that the loss of the mass relay network is not really that much of an issue. It is. Ship based FTL allows you to travel ~12 lightyears per 24 hours (check the wiki). That is entirely too slow to sustain--let alone rebuild--the galactic civilization. Even if the exploding mass relays did not wipe out everything in their vicinity as the Alpha Relay did (with a bit of imagination we can say that the blast depleted their energy or something), most of the galaxy's infrastructure is gone and planets that were not attacked are overcrowded with refugees. In short, it's a mess.
Further, I'd like to point out a major complaint that has not been adressed: We learn nothing of the fate and future of our party, of the characters we've grown attached to throughout the series. I don't think that asking for this to be changed is unreasonable, considering the importance of the characters for the game as a whole.

This is a good video, it's fair. While it doesn't avoid calling some of us whiners, it does point out how it would clearly and obviously be problematic for a series based on a choice/impact dynamic to simply remove or cripple that dynamic in the final moments of a 5 year build up.

Wouldnt it just be impossible? I mean, if you destroy the relays then we cant really return to where we were

No. Shepards story will not end on such a pathetic note. This is a Non-Cannon ending. Sorry Bioware, we do not want you to destroy the Mass Effect universe.

Or since EA is invloved the next game could be Sim Effect: Galaxy. Where Shepard goes around building farm land and cake shops to please the survivors.
