There is a reason why PR and marketing departments are paid so much in a lot of industries. Perception is very important in every business. There are a lot of fans that are very unhappy with the Mass Effect ending and I dare say that the amount of posts and attacks on Bioware are even greater than the Dragon Age 2 ending. Bioware could decide to just ignore the problem and hope that it goes away, but they won't. If say 20% of fans absolutely abhor the ending and 50% of those fans decide to never buy Bioware games anymore. That's a 10% revenue loss and that amounts to well over millions of dollars lost. The Bioware team has to deal with this problem either through PR or through a DLC. The fans that are still posting and keeping these threads going are getting the attention of bloggers and eventually those blog posts will draw the attention of "official gaming sites". It's a dominoes effect and eventually Bioware is going to lose a lot of credibility if they don't deal with this problem. The Mass Effect 3 ending has dominated every fan forum for the game, so this isn't a minor subsection of a small population. It's a majority of the fans. And you don't want to ****** off a majority of your customers. Fans who post in forums are also the fans that are willing to buy new games from a gaming house, so they are the loyal customers and hence the customers that the gaming house can bring to the table in a business deal. Without those loyal customers, the gaming house loses a very important bargaining chip in their business deal with game publishers.
From a business standpoint, it's also foolish for Bioware to not have included a happy ending in their game. Mass Effect 3 is being released in one of the worst economic downturns in recent history. There are numerous marketing studies that show during economic downturns that happy endings and comedies in entertainment sell much better than dramatic or sad endings. It stomps me why Bioware didn't get that simple concept. Mass Effect 3 is a game and essentially entertainment, so a lot of the players are playing the game for escapism and closure and not playing the game to experience some form of enlightenment or high form of art.
