In the video sequences you can see him with a gun between the assault troops.

Yeah. In the cynical sense, I'm inclined to agree. They ran out of time. I figure there's a good chance I'm deluding myself by thinking it's intentional, but I'd almost rather believe that than think they just gave up in the 11th hour. It keeps me from being completely gut-wrenchingly depressed. Most of the time...
All the evidence I've seen about cut materials, stuff removed from the ending, and then the nonsensical way everything was slapped together makes me think this was a rush job, and we're not supposed to notice. We're supposed to be so in love with the franchise that we nod and smile a la Emperor's New Clothes, and not point out all the logical problems.

There's a really well-written paper, after BSG ended, on why "God did it" is a terrible literary device and no kind of ending any writer should employ... let's see... google powers activate...fahnskap wrote...
The game had me completely hooked, up to the platform to heaven. Now I can't bring myself to do the second playthrough I was really looking forward to, or replaying either of the first two games.
AHA! Found it. Read this, you'll find some interesting parallels (major BSG spoilers, of course):

Ok, for those of you you don't think Shep was dreaming/hallucinating/reacting to indoctrination, one question.
If the end sequence was real, just how did Anderson get inside the Citadel when at the beginning of the scene(when Shep first gets up) the radio chatter was clear that they were retreating because NO ONE MADE IT TO THE BEAM. Also, Anderson was an officer, not a front line foot soldier.
A wizard did it.

This. Exactly my point - where is Shepard?
"No."
"Just because
the original designers couldn't break the cycle and made bad choices, doesn't mean we
can't break it. We will no longer step back and let endless billions of innocents
throughout history and until the end of time be slaughtered for some
vague concept that something might go wrong. We have united the Quarians
and Geth - and brought many of the organic races together in common
cause. We have proven it can be done, synthetics and organics beside
each other. It might not last, we might all self destruct in flames
tomorrow or the day after or a thousand years from now."
"But that is
our choice, our decision to make as thinking beings. We will not go
quietly into the night to let your reapers and precious cycle butcher
everyone we hold dear! WE FIGHT, and we will send your reapers straight
to hell!"
And then Shepard shoots the starchild in face.

The ghost child given him 3 choices. All fueled by powerful space magic.
1) Luke can take control of the Death Star and fly it far away, but it will kill him.
2) Luke can destroy it but if he does he will send the Galaxy into a technological dark age.
3) Luke can turn everyone into a half Jedi half Sith hybrid person. Ending the age old war. This will also kill him.
Under all 3 endings his friends are permanently stuck on Endor and he will never see them again. Chewy will starve to death because he can't eat the same food as normal people.
Everyone loves this right?!?

This is because you weren't playing the Uber Terrific Ultimate Game of the Century Edition like Casey. It comes out next year, and has everything that was supposed to be in this one, but never got finished.. oh and it's only available with a giant Shepard bust, your choice of Male or Female, plated in genuine paper mache for only $300
Computim LOL!!
Actually I think it's more like this: The version with the "real" ending will only be available free to people who purchased the Collector's Edition, that was how it was always planned. However, because they are so gracious, they have now decided to make that premium content available to all people who bought the game for an additional $30, because they are so nice and don't want you to miss out.
Oh and that "real" ending wasn't planned all along and developed alongside the main game but labeled DLC just so it could be sold as an extra "sprinkles on top", nothing to see here move along.
