I will be really disappointed if the developers made the choice of better graphics / animations instead of promoting continuity of the saga by our attachment of our character. Disappointed and surprised.
But it doesn't sound like a choice to me.
So the other alternative is that this is an unexpected issue.
If that's the case, devs will probably be able to fix it.
Anyway, I hope they will.

I don't know if this has been posted before but here we go...

Will I be able to make changes to my Shepherd when I import?

You will be given the option to alter the appearance of Shepherd, and you will be able to change class (i.e. Soldier to Adept) as well.

NOTE: Some ME2 saves will not be able to import the face-file of your Shepherd. You will need to re-create the appearance when importing the file.

Thanks, but I already put that in the OP ;)

If it turns out that there's no way to properly import your Shep's face into ME3, you can take a look in this thread for a potential solution:

I'm glad some people are finding use of the information that I've compiled.

I've also updated my post to include links to the new Male Shepard tool.

Ridiculous that a large feature of the trilogy doesn't fully work.

What is wrong with Bioware? They can't even make a video game correctly anymore?
https://help.ea.com/...ffect-3-on-x360

That article implies the issue is only on X-Box 360's using cloud saves.
Is this true or are all Mass Effect 1 based saves essentially screwed?
How come everything else imports but the face doesn't? Hoes does that make sense.
What about the PC versions, are they safe? Does Steam ---> Origin cause an issue?

That seems to be a separate, and for xbox360 users, much larger issue. Basically, those imports don't seem to work at all. A friend of mine came over from England and started his game of ME2 here (I was the one who gave him his copy after all) and saved his Shep on Cloud. Messaged him earlier today telling him to halt his playthrough and start over, cause hey, he won't be able to import into ME3 at all.

But even if he starts over, he gets to the issue presented in this thread. Ie even when he is still on the same physical saving media where the playthrough started (his own xbox harddrive), his old ME1 face will not import properly and he will have to do remake his face from scratch.

Why? What kind of alien coding is the ME 3 charecter creator made of that can't even accept a simple face?
How does Mass Effect 2 do it then? Space magic? Why do I have to re-create my face? As far as I am told, the ME 1 faces when imported to ME 2 are unique and can't be re-created in the ME 2 charecter creator. Yet they still appear. Why not with ME 3? What kind of error message does it give?

It seems the closer we get to the first launch, the more confusing this issue gets.

I am fairly dubious. If the ME1 faces can be imported into ME2 then why not ME3? Are the CC tools so different between ME2 and ME3 that it can't accept the same face? If so that is crazy, given that this game is all about continuity and BioWare are no doubt very aware that thousands of people have been keeping hold of their ME1 saves for over half a decade so you would think they might have ironed this sort of nonsense out.

But whatever, from everything I've read so far it seems that if this is a problem it'll just mean you have to re-make your Shep in the ME3 CC as all your other choices, etc will carry over still. I've already made a very accurate version of my shep in the ME3 demo and I have a note of the code so hopefully if this is a real thing then then it wont be a problem for me.

I don't know why. If I did, I'd write some code myself and submit it for their commercial use =)

The error apparently goes something like (I've never seen it quoted exactly) "Can't read face data. Press A/Space/Cross to go to facial reconstruction."

When it says I can alter my Shep, does that mean I can make small changes - or will the face totally change and I'll loose all his features and have to start from scratch?

And if I'm not using cloud, should my Shep import okay?

I'm an Xbox user.

I guess altering your Shep works the same way as it did in 2.

Maybe.. we still don't know about the face.

It means that the face will reset and you'll have to start from scratch.

As for the cloud issue, as far as I've understood, cloud saves can't be imported at all, while HDD saves will not import ME1 faces properly

I don't want to make guesses to how the process for changing your import Shepard works but in ME2 you either accepted the import face or started from scratch. I'm guessing it'll be like that.

If your save file is not in the cloud then the import should work fine except for this possible problem with having to re-make the face if you've carried over your shepard since ME1

I asked some guy who made a CE unboxing vid for the 360 version on youtube about this. He'll give me an answer tonight (american time).

Sorry folks but I'm confused. I keep reading about problems importing ME1 faces. I guess my question Is this- will my ME2 Shepard (who I imported from ME1) be able to be imported into ME3? (i play 360 btw and have never messed with cloud)

Yes, he will be imported, but you'll have to rebuild his appearance.

That is the whole issue basically. You can't import straight from ME1, but with saves that were imported from ME1 into ME2, and will be imported from ME2 into ME3 there might be an issue that prevents the face from being imported properly

In some cases you will have to recreate your character's face again. For istance I tryed to recreate my Shepard (ME1+ME2) in ME3 Demo but I couldn't, in fact one of the codes (a particular eye color) is not available anymore.

Lame. Well I wont be able to play ME3 until the 11th, so hopefully a patch or solution will be out by then.
