You can't import a face created in Mass Effect 1 into 3! Bioware has responded! (See OP)

Why can't they do the same thing as they did ME1->ME2 with the polygon/texture data?! I don't understand :\\ I hope they make a patch but I'm not holding my breath. I'm shocked they would overlook something so blatantly obvious. Of course the people who have been playing since ME1 want to finish the triology with *their* Shepards.

I hope some dev will explain why.

Seriously Bioware? One of your big selling points is being able to carry our same character through all 3 games. So importing that same character should be simple and problem free. When ME1 came out I spent over an hour making my Shepard and was (and still am) thrilled with the final look. Now I'm going to need to recreate my Shepard from scratch?

Honestly, BW cannot pretend this is news to them. I am sure their employees, reviewers, etc tried importing their characters and ran into thus problem. Bioware had to have known about this. There is no reason this should even be a problem and is completely inexcusable. Granted, worst things could happen, but this is a stupid problem to have in the final game of a trilogy where you're supposed to be able to carry your character over all 3 games. Guess not.

You would think they would have thought of this. Seriously? Seriously?

As I said before, it is not a to bad of a process recreating your Shep in ME2. Yes yes, its disappointing. But, life goes on so.

Yup.

When I recreated my Shepard in ME2 and then tried to use the face code in ME3, it looked nothing like my Shepard. The options aren't in ME3 to make my Shepard. Granted, it was the demo, but I no longer have faith in the retail version.

It would still be nice to have a real BW developer comment in this thread...but I guess that is really wishful thinking.

I dont even know whether i have the passion anymore to complete other playthroughs before me3...its pointless...15 saves...all need new faces...

And you know another thing? After persuading a few friends, TO FINALLY create a custom shepherd through 1 - 2 to import into 3 this would have to happen huh.

It's easy to get an ME1 face code... just count the ticks and write it down in Mass Effect 2 format.

Many answers can be solved waiting for the release date.

There's your problem, not Bioware's.

Still feel we need more evidence. I mean, that dev comment about if we don't have a face code to act as a source, you need to reconstruct your face--doesn't make sense. Even if there isn't a visible save code, the ME1 save does have a hidden list of your Shep's features (http://masseffect.li...com/656484.html), a face code in itself--well duh, since ME2 was able to recreate Shep's face. Going off that train of thought, the only thing I could think of is that ME2's save file or ME3's import system doesn't access or record that hidden/internal list Shep's physical features, and instead lazily uses the import code. Maybe that is why they can't fix it, you would need to fix ME3's importer or ME2's save file system, a daunting task in itself (no patches to fix incorrect flags in ME1--Conrad--or glitches in ME2's plot importer--the Consort--remember).

I wouldn't care if my face code would actually translate to ME3. Maybe my Shepard is some kind of freak, but it's not working for me. :\\

I don't know why everyone is talking about making their characters in ME2 so they have a face code for ME3. Why not just make your faces in the ME3 demo? It doesn't take very long and is not very hard if you have a photo of your me2 shep for reference and then you don't have to worry about the me2 code transferring to the me3 cc properly.

Obviously it's ridiculous that anyone might have to do this but this seems like
The best option to me.

It isn't though. My main shep uses a nose that just isn't available in the ME2 CC.

I'm really disheartened by this. My canon Shepard is the first Shepard I ever made and I haven't changed her looks once, and now it looks like I won't even get to finish out the trilogy with her face? Just with someone else who vaguely looks like her? Not cool Bioware. This is something that should have been locked down a long time ago. No way this game should have gone gold without this right.

To me the Shepards barely look like the originals when you look at comparisons like here. One of the biggest problems is the eyes. Why are they screwing over people who have been playing Mass Effect since the beginning?

I don't.

I've either used the same female Shepard face for the vasy majority of my runs or used the default male Shepard for quick runs so I could see how the make romance options were in ME2.

So give that to me Shepard is the same face for five years having to remake it is a big thing.

As someone said above you can't recreate a Shepard completely in ME2 because certain options just aren't there.

There are 29 pages in this thread. You would think they'd notice how important this is to us and actually give us an answer.

Ugh. Guess that means all my ME1 Shepards are going under the knife, then. Not hype for it one bit, I must say.

I wonder if this is related to the new facial expression system. Considering the developer mentions how the ME3 CC only approximates a face via the face code instead of actually importing it straight, that seems somewhat likely.

It'd be nice if they'd actually confirm that's why. Still seems like it's a huge thing they overlooked.

Agreed. This game should not have gone gold without this fixed. One would imagine importing your characters looks & decisions would gave been locked down at one of the earliest stages of development. If something like this was overlooked it does not instill a great deal of confidence in Bioware.
