I wonder if this is related to the new facial expression system. Considering the developer mentions how the ME3 CC only approximates a face via the face code instead of actually importing it straight, that seems somewhat likely.

It'd be nice if they'd actually confirm that's why. Still seems like it's a huge thing they overlooked.

If that is the case, we will likely not be able to get our ME1 faces, or ME2 faces for that matter, back at all in a 100% intact manner. The best possible scenario we could get is an approximation off the ME1 face via patch.

I've been testing importing out for the last hour with all sorts of modifications to the save file from editing their contents on my PC. I have four ME1 imported ME2 saves and one fresh ME2 save. Three of the four resulted in a face code error. The one where no error occured only imported the hair, but it was the default colour, and the rest of the face was default - fresh ME2 file imported fine; same everything.

The error was, 'Mass Effect 3 cannot successfully determine the custom face code used by this imported save game. Please update your character's appearance'.

Something else to note is that my cloud save transferred from another Xbox where it was created, to my current Xbox, imported, but with the face code error. I also made a copy of that file prior to opening it in ME3 and I re-assigned its Console ID to my current Xbox and that worked too.

Luckily I created a new face in the demo a while ago, because all us ME1 importers are fooked. :/

Well, I'm off to play some Mass Effect. See you all on release day. ;)

Has anyone bothered emailing one of the critics that we are reviewing the game? Chances are we'll be ignored or given a generic "wait for the review" comment, but it might lead to an answer.

Oh god, I hope not. Based on the demo, I think the facial expressions of everyone were far inferior to ME1 & ME2. If they dropped something as important as face imports to implement a system that is in no way an improvement, then Bioware is really out of touch with their fanbase.

I would be very, very happy with a Day 1 patch.

You will need to create a new face, yes. The game will otherwise import fine.

Also, the one that didn't call up the error was the file with the default face code bug. So yeah, looks like no face code equals no face. And bug face code basically equals default face.

Bye again. ;)

What happens if you enter your ME2 facecode? Does it import correctly or mess up like the demo?

It's the eyes, I think. In pretty much every Shep I've seen, it's always the eyes that are screwed up.

@MartinDN The mouth and nose look alright, just different lighting. The face shape is a little off (not a wide enough jawline), and the eyes and eyebrows are completely wrong, also the hair isn't the right style. Changing the shape and colour of his eyes would make a big difference.

Yeh im going to have to definiteley play around try to get it right, this was a straight import via face code, no edits. Just illustrating what happens if you do actually get a face code from me1. Also my hair from me1 isnt in me3 is it not ?

Thanks dude, this seems like some pretty solid confirmation (unless you are a LIAR?!?!)

Ah well, I got a code by making my shep in the ME3 demo and although it doesn't look quite right it's close enough to my ugly ass shepard to keep me happy.

Still, poor work in this regard Bioware.

Well I guess that settles it. Pretty poor form, Bioware

From experience, known problem treads only get addresses if they're 200+ pages long. Anything below that is pretty much ignored. If this actually is as it appears, then I imagine that about 1:00 am Tuesday the forums will be lighting up with confused and angry fans because of this. In all honestly, I think that is the only time we'll actually get a straight answer on this.

What a kick in the nuts this is to long time fans. They really couldn't come up with something that worked with a face made in ME1?

If true--I'm still waiting for evidence--but we have enough right now to make me expect Tuesday, the forums are going to explode...
