In order to make more sense of the random unlock system, there needs to be a way to unlock something more specific based on how much time you've spent. Character Credits or something.
After so many hours of vying for a specific unlock I am going to get bored and forget about it altogther.
The reason systems work like what BF3 has in place, is that although you have to work for an unlock, you know you're going to get it sooner or later and not be punished by random statistics.

What BF has is the player picking a class and sticking to it, gaining the necessary xp to unlock class weapons and equipment. General unlocks like the shotguns and certain rifles help keep things moving along when you're 1billion xp away from the next unlock. I got everything in BC 2 a long time ago so I've forgotten what took forever to unlock, and I haven't been playing too much BF 3..
The ME 3 system is a little more... abstract. Weapons and equipment are unlocked across all classes, so there are pros and cons. The biggest con of course is that it appears to be totally random. The way unlocks are now really don't seem to me like they'll help sustain interest in the MP for very long. People like to work towards specific goals, not pray to the RNG gods for a lucky drop.

They need a N7 pack, that's like... several hundred thousand credits that guarantees you unique items. As it is now, the only thing that would really irk me is if I somehow bought like 50 packs and got nothing new, and just upgrades.
I honestly don't mind the unlock system. All classes and weapons and modifiers benefit, you just have to be willing to work with them, rather than narrowing your play style to a specific role. Some people do that, I for one hate doing that, in any game I play I like to change it up. In this regard the unlock system helps me, because I have no desire to grind my way up a tree just to get to the end, I'll play any and all classes whenever I feel like it. The leveling complements this too... Very quick level progression so you can go through all the classes relatively quickly, unlocking on your way.
I just play to have fun, and whenever I get a new class, even one I think I'll like, my mood will decide when I play it.

The only benefit to the randomness, that I can see so far, is that you are kind of nudged into a particular class and set of weapons based on what you've acquired so far.
So this detracts a little from seeing the exact same classes running the exact same weapons (and those people probably all pick black too).
But is it necessary to pigeonhole everone's options in order to mix up the playing field? I think there are better options, like requiring a certain amount of time spent on a class to unlock deeper class options, and the same with weapons.
All I'm saying is that it doesn't have to be random, there has to be a better way.

As someone who has actually played trading card games in the past, I understand how addictive the random chance of opening a booster can be. But at the same time, most successful card games (like Magic) have a direct market for buying the card(s) you really want. So I don't know why there isn't an option to be able to spend like 200k credits to buy a particular class. Yes, it would be an investment, but at least you could get what you wanted and then had to unlock the slightly less important junk through boosters.
200k credits for your choice of a rare seems like a fair deal.

Only, to get to that 200k would be a terrible grind. Here's a very short breakdown of it :
(Assuming silver challenge)
35k/game x 15-25mins/game x X games = 200k
Assuming you never fail before the final objective mission, and you already have reasonably decent equipment to begin consistent silver runs, you'd need something like 85 minutes or 5 games(optimistic count) to get one class. Of course once you unlock the class you can carry on as usual with the rest of the booster packs, but I think you'll also run out of consumables before then. I just think the current system needs more work done to it, where you can buy more class specific items and perhaps even character packs.

I have given up on trying to get the Widow sniper rifle. I have everything unlocked and with over 15 hours after maxed to trying to get the Widow i have given up on the demo. I'll save my energy for the real game

The way its been going for me, the weopons I use the most are the ones that I get upgrades for I use the avenger for every class and quickly got it upgraded to the avenger X, while I barely use the revenant and its still at level I. Same with the Predator, Mantis, and Katana. I use those a lot and they're fully leveled while their less used counterparts are still low leveled.
As for characters, those have been random for the most part, but I find that character training packs (experience points and customization options) tend to come up for my less used classes.
So I think that there is some level of order to it....unless I'm just REALLY unusually lucky. lol

Well, you could play five perfect games of Silver, get your 200k credits, and buy a bunch of random packs only to get absolutely nothing.
I mean, I play Infilitrator and Sentinel, and other than the Turian Sentinel (which is an uncommon) I have yet to receive a single relevant unlock for those classes. No widow, no Salarian Infiltrator. I get a lot of Shotgun upgrades and Tempest upgrades despite not using either. So I would be more than willing to play Silver a bunch of times in order to unlock the classes I want.

I sorta like the random packs but I agree that an addtional option is necessary.

I'm starting to think that Turian Sentinel is actually rare and just misflagged as an uncommon, since veteran packs guarantee an uncommon or better and I routinely get veteran packs with 5 commons despite having only unlocked two ranks of Turian Sentinel.
