I reject this topic.
Not all great stories have "happy endings". Great stories are fulfilling, possibly in ways that agree/disagree with the player.
Would Leonardo DiCaprio be a more memorable/fulfilled character if he didn't die at the end of Titanic?
Would Gladiator be the same if Maximus didn't die at the end?
For fu.ck sake this isn't a bloody movie. A movie dosen't allow the promise of choices for beginings and endings. Games do especially one that promised us a satisfactory ending that mattered due to our choices made in the whole trilogy of the game.
Nice Language. Let's not make this a games vs. movies arguement.
I'm talking about storytelling. Storytelling transcends literature, movies, plays, ... and videogames. It's pointless in furthering this discussion, as its all specualtion anyway. The game has not been released.
He is righ and you're wrong.
Storytelling for video-games is much different than storytelling for a movie or a book. Why? Because a video-game is interactive.
The entire sellingpoint of Mass Effect has always been the fact that you have CHOICE in these games. You can CHOOSE how things play out. The entire purpose of Mass Effect is that we as the player are (supposed to be) capable of shaping our own story and universe through our actions and decisions.
Simply put: because this is a game with multiple endings, BioWare would easily have implemented at least one truly happy ending, so everyone can be satisfied. You will be satisfied with your bittersweet ending and the people in this thread will be satisfied with the happy ending. Give us choice, because isn't that what Mass Effect is all about? About choice?
I rest my case.
