I hear what you're saying but in my opinion, it's comes down to acting. I mean, hell, I've seen Ian McKellan on various talk shows as himself but that didn't alter my perspective on his stellar portrayal of Gandalf in LoTR. I sat at a dinner table with Patrick Stewart at a fund raiser years ago before Star Trek First Contact and it didn't negatively affect, in my eyes, his portrayal of Jean Luc Picard.

Still, it is interesting that it does alter your experience in accepting them in any role other than themselves.
