Hi everyone, I've done a great deal of research on the Dragon Age archer and I'm constantly getting differing opinions. Has a final conclusion been reached on which is the best attribute to create a powerful archer? Is it Cunning or Dexterity or both???

Thanks for any advice, tips and or opinions you might offer.

I'm not a number cruncher, so take my advice with a pinch of salt, but I've done a few archer builds and I always thought it should be dependent on whether you wanted to go rogue or warrior.

A rogue archer should be a cunning-heavy build (2:1 cun to dex ratio), as they can exploit Song of Courage and Lethality.

A warrior archer should be very dex-heavy since they won't be able to exploit cunning like a rogue will, and in Awakening they can take the Spirit Warrior spec which makes them gods (though that's hardly necessary since Awakening is a joke even on Nightmare).

Thank you Ferretinabun for your reply. I can see your logic completely. I guess with archers one doesn't know what will work until one tries one character build dex heavy and the other one build cun heavy in both rogue and warrior classes.

When I read the title of the Subject I thought: Ha, Oh really the final answer.

I've never tried a 2 to 1 cunning build is it any good? I think I did about a 50/50 cunning/dex. and I started out with a Dex. build. I seem to remember a 50/50 Strength/Dex. build being possible too.

What builds as everyone tried and what was the results?

In DAO I usually build Leliana to be my main archer. She fills a few roles: archer, lockpicker, trap-disarmer, and sometimes sweetheart.

Strength sufficient to equip armor (20ish).

Dexterity goes to the numbers required to get the top-tier archery/rogue talents and skills. Cunning contributes to a number of things: armor penetration, Bardic abilities, and rogue abilities. So after Dexterity is sufficient to acquire all the necessary talents and skills, I tend to focus more on Cunning.

But there is still the question of Willpower. I like Leliana to be able to fire a bunch of different shots, So I put a goodish number of points into Willpower.

I do not use the Bard; prefer Duelist instead for my Rogues, and use DEX more so than Cunning, esp if using Awakenings.

It has been a while since playing, but I would leave Cunning at 30 for some needed usage. However, I actually used enough STR to wear the best heavy armors (ie; 42, I believe), and also would take some Willpower, as I prefer more fuel for the road. It was not a min/max dream, but very effective and durable.

Edit: correct figures

In Awakening the archer can do serious damage.

In DAO the archer is (arguably) more of a Lethality + Cunning sort of build; in Awakening the archer is more of a Dexterity + Accuracy build.

It is a bit of a toss up sometimes how I build Leliana. Sometimes I try to maximize her damage. But other times I use her Bardic abilities to contribute to the crit. chance and damage done by all the melee fighters in the team. I think I prefer her as a Bard with plenty of willpower. Suits my style of play and the way I usually build my team.

But I doubt there is a single best way to build an archer. The archer build is determined to a fairly large extent by what the archer is required to do as a member of the team.

Bumping this . . .

I just rolled my first real archer on nightmare. She's doing pretty good. I was wondering if the fix-pack made any significant changes to the way the game handles archery mechanics. I'm assuming the dex/cun build is still the way to go, with Lethality being the ultimate goal for max armor penetration and damage?

Also, is there any real difference between long/short bows? I'm using Bregan's Bow right now, and I expect I'll be using it for a while. Leliana usually uses it through most of the game, if not the whole thing. So many of the add-on items are insanely OPd. . .

It's funny, I look back to when the game was first released and there were a bevy complaints about certain classes/builds being "broken". Some of them were legitimately busted (dex-dagger problem lol) but others were just plain misunderstood, and archer seems like one of them. They can do insane damage under the right circumstances.

Bumping this to ask:

I have Bregan's Bow, is that going to be my weapon for the whole game? Or is Far Song still better? What about Spear Thrower? I'm just curious if anyone has sat down and done the math.

I think I use Falon 'Din's Reach. If you go by Tiers Bregan's Bow is Tier 5, I think Spear Thrower is tier 6 and Far Song is Tier 7.

So yeah I'd switch out to Spear Thrower or Falon'Din's Reach when you get them.
