It's true that no small part of my enjoyment of him comes from my enjoyment of his language. But I must disagree when you call it soulless...I suspect that it simply boils down to the fact that your musical theory can be another's spiritual songs. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and not everyone will appreciate Tolkien, just as not everybody enjoys eating kimchi. Whether he is irrelevant to you is one thing. Whether he is irrelevant objectively is another.

Are you a fan of Finnegans Wake?

I don't much care for Joyce, to be honest, although I did like 'The Dead'.

I'm a fan (in the extreme sense) of Shakespeare, Tennyson, Dickinson, Housman, Tolkien, Gibran, and Gene Wolfe, to name a few.

@Pansyrocker

I really enjoy me some Tolkien and definitely understand what he contributed to the fantasy genre, nut i have to agree with you on most points:)

Then I hereby declare you a genius and infallible!

You may kiss my ring, good sir!

What can i say i am more proud of what the old Norse Sagas have contributed to the world of fantasy than Tolkien, without them, Lord of the RIngs wouldn't exist.

Some people say harsh review.8.4 is a pretty good score for a harsh review.I think he did a good job.One of the best reviews i have read so far.You guys find little things say hes biased and try to make it sound like his whole review should be discarded.Sure few parts were bad but otherwise most of it was pretty good.Anyway i would rate this game for x box as 8.6 or 8.7 For PC would be 8.9 or 9.0 as a person who has not played but researched a lot of this game and knows a lot of spoilers.Save it all for when a reviewer gives it a bad score.

Well, Finnegans Wake was a created language put to use. Joyce spoke 7 languages and integrated them into an evolved 8th.

He also wrote stylistically in every form available and then some.

And he had the attention to detail...

I honestly like pulp lit. Give me Wilde or Jordan and I'll be happy.

Although I do like the Russians too.

Well this is what 8.4 means to IGN

8.0 to 8.4 (Impressive)

On the cusp of greatness, "Impressive" games may not always have the award-winning qualities of our higher-rated titles, but they're still a heck of a lot of fun and should appeal to most gaming enthusiasts.

Please don't make me apply what I already divulged from Gamespot to IGN, you will see that an 8.4 isn't really an 8.4

Scores are

-The only real power a reviewer has on a game.

-An easy way for people to disregard a review's substance.

-The most debated thing about a review.

What about the framerate on the PS3? Someone on Neogaf posted that the framerate was awefull. But if it is that bad they would have mentioned it in the review i think.

Someone?

So yeah I've seen a few folks mis-conception in here, same with that reviewer getting a buncha facts wrong.

The entire Baldurs Gate series was created by Bioware, with some support and help by Black Isle (they collaborated to some small extent on all the infinity projects). But while Bioware I believe wanted to make a 3rd BG they ultimately ended up wrapping it up in an expansion pack instead ending the series.

Black Isle (before they where black isle) made Fallout and ended up forming Black Isle (from Interplay) when they released Fallout 2. After BG came out and had a larger comercial success they used the engine to make PST, and the IWD games.

Before they where all (majority of them) lay-ed off due to Interplay just doing a lot of shady business practices they where working on Fallout 3. Which had been halted prior to the lay offs. Ultimately stayed with Interplay well after its demise and got sold to Bethesda later.

Black Isle did NOT make Baldur's Gate 1, or 2. And they where not working on BG3 (no one is or probably ever will). They where however working on a Fallout 3 prior to going under.

As for the review? I thought it was all painted with a bit of bias toward is own disappointment it didn't match up to his fantasy dreams of what BG3 should be. And really no one should go into this game expecting it to be BG3. Its a new game, in the 'spirit' of the BG series. Which means long games, big story, fun characters and all around coated in a layer of awesomeness.

And it looks like Bioware is delivering on that.

8,4 seems way too low for DA even for IGN AU. First of all, graphics shouldn't hold too much weight when reviewing an RPG (if the graphics isn't horrible) while gameplay, story and lasting appeal should be the ones most interesting. With 9.0 in both gameplay and lasting appeal I think it's safe to say that close to 9.0 should be more appropriate.

Actually I think IGN overall has too high reviews for good games (GTA 4 is probably 8,5 to me etc) which therefore makes me kind of irritated by this review.

I have to compare it to IGN AU's score for Fable 2, 9.2. (probably different reviewer though, didn't check that).

Fable 2 and DA are of course 2 completely different games, but overall score should be some kind of indication of the overall quality anyway. That's the problem with scores, as a reader you always compare a games score to others.

The graphics part is probably true about DA, but the sound score seems very low when I compare that IGN AU gave Fable 2 a 9.0 in sound.

Now Fable 2 had extremely over used music. One battle tune, one suspense tune etc. And the tunes used weren't very memorable, except the one used in Fable 1 as well. There's hardly any area specific music at all.

From the DA Score player it's obvious that DA has so much more music. Also Fable 2 didn't have that much voice acting since only quest givers would speak (in monologues). Otherwise the voice acting was idiot villagers telling me "If I had a ring we could get married"...

Also Fable 2 got 9,0 in gameplay and 9,5 in lasting appeal, which I absolutely can't agree with.

In Fable 2 you couldn't die and there hardly was any penalty for getting knocked out either. You could cast ONE spell (without charging) but in the DA review he's complaining that 6 are too few... You obtained your quests and side quests not from exploring or converstating with NPC (ofc since you couldn't talk) but instead from the pause menu. Expressions soon got very tired and with that as the only interaction the whole NPC interaction soon grew real tired too. I had a fun time with Fable 2 for some hours but at the end I just wanted to get it done.

I had a pretty good time with Fable 2 the first 5-10 hours, which turned into uninspired button mashing after that and as a whole the game has a lot of big flaws. From what I could read DA didn't have any real flaw, but still got considerably lower than Fable 2.

I haven't (ofc) even played DA but I think it's safe to say the game was robbed in this review.

Hmm an odd thread this given im assuming you guys haven't played it?

I agree he seems to be harsh and id hoped for a higher score as Id love the game to be fantastic.... but until I've played it its impossible to comment on if his review is 100% accurate or 100% BS is it not?

I think 8.4 is a reasonable score. I think it lost marks for not being all that accessible to a general audience, and for slightly ropey graphics. As a fanatic for Bioware RPGs, I'm still incredibly excited for it... roll on Friday!
