Dear Mac Walters,
Please know I am not doubting your writing skills. You're obviously doing something write if you are the lead writer for a very popular game series. However, I have qualms about what you've said in this blog.
Now, I started the Mass Effect series with ME2 on the PS3 and I loved. I've come to adore it. I've played the game 8 times and I hardly play a game twice. ME2 was amazing in my eyes. Even after 7 times of doing the suicide mission, going through the Omega 4 relay and experiencing it all over again for the 8th still has me at the edge of seat, wondering if I'll make it through. The final confrontation with the Illusive Man was a great way to tell him he's awesome or that Shepard is top dog.
As for the recent leak... Half of me believes, while the other half doubts it. If indeed these leaks are true, then I'm heartbroken and I feel betrayed. You say it's "about the journey - not the outcome". But if the outcome leaves me with what the leaks say, then Shepard's journey was all for nothing. Everything I and many others have done, were for nothing. The time and money everyone spent on the ME games, DLCs included... was wasted. While I understand that you wanted to tie up Shepard's story, IF the leaks are true, then it leaves people upset and confused.
I'm not going to go into details about it because the leaks may be false or the actual endings have changed. But still, the leaks have left me upset. From the leaked script, everything else looks great! I love the characters and I can't wait to face against them! Sadly, I'm one of those people who gets attached to fictional characters. I've gotten attached to my main LI, Kaidan, and my crew. People always ask me "Who's your favorite/least favorite crew member?" and I say no one. I like all of them. I like Jack's angst, I like Ashley's poetry, I like Garrus calibrating the Normandy, etc.
But to see my crew... my friends... my love interest... end up like the supposed endings? That's a stab to the heart.
I want a true bittersweet endings. I want the death and destruction, but I also want my Shepard to be with his/her crew at the end. You could tie it up easily. You could have one of the crew members narrate what happened to Shepard and his crew. You could say Shepard and his LI lived until Shepard's end and depending on the LI, died shortly after. You could say they had kids. You could say what happened to the rest of your crew, saying they lived their lives happily. But you could still mention that the crew would stare at the sky and wonder how everyone else is doing. Maybe have it where all the narration came from a letter, zoom at, and zoom into Earth and show the state of Earth.
But I digress. I still have hope that the leaks could be false and the endings are different. They don't sound consistent. Commander Shepard has done the impossible and defied suicide missions. He destroyed Saren and Sovereign and survived a building collapse. Shepard managed to stop the collectors and (at least in my saves) everyone survived. Shepard has fought against thousands of geth, hundreds of mercs, a bunch of collectors and husks, Sovereign, Saren, and Rachni. Yes, the battle at the Citadel had lots of death and took thousands of fleets. If he was able to do that... then with every race and every fleet available, alongside a Deus Ex Machinima, then Shepard should be able win... with the cost of billions. It's war, so yes, people will die. But Shepard? The Shepard who's defied the impossible and survive countless of suicide mission? Surely this has to be the same Shepard.
I'll wait until game day to see if the leaks are true or not. But until then, I'm left to wonder. I just hope the leaks were dead wrong.
From an obsessed ME fan,
Elegana
