I'd just like to make clear that this thread in no way condemns sex before marriage.  If that's your bag fine.

However in the Mass Effect games to be in relationship you have to have sex, indeed sex seems to be the ultimate goal of the relationship.

I like to RP my Shepard as honourable and classy so I can't get into a relationship because there is no option for marriage before having sex.

While BioWare have to be comended for their progressive stance in regards to homosexuals, they have really failed at putting core values in their games.

This is only true for the Garrus and Jack romances so far.

Have you seen how expensive weddings are these days?

More importantly...how expensive divorce is?

"Honorable and classy" =/= "celibate".

Furthermore, I know Garrus' romance at least can be interpreted as not sexual, and I'm pretty sure the same can be said of Jack's.

Shepard is the Captain of the ship! They can get married quickly and cheaply.

Your "core values" may not be the same as someone else's "core values."

It's a valid discussion to have, of course. Whether marriage has any place in Shepard's story/stories. But avoiding value-laden terminology would probably be a good idea.

Quickly and cheaply.

The two biggest qualities women want in their weddings.

In Mirandas romance at least, you can refuse to sleep with her before the SM without ending the relationship, and there's an option in Thanes that does the same. Think the other ME2 romances are ended if you turn them down before the SM though.

But BioWare have already shown that they are willing to support other people's values, why not this?

My Shepard would not fall for someone so shallow and materialistic.  Weddings should be about love not opulance.

Yeah they should be.

But they're not.

Weddings should be about whatever the couple wants them to be about.

Anyway. I have no problem with Shep getting married if s/he wants to. I wouldn't pursue that option because it doesn't fit into the story of any of my Sheps. But I'm all for choice for as many people as possible.

I don't think the devs have anything against marriage. They just haven't included it.

Wait what? Are you talking about the renegade route with her or the paragon one? To me, her romance scene didn't involve sex (which I wouldn't find appropriate for that scene or their meaning of the relationship), but that's just me.

Aye. I'm not getting married in that either.

Although flirting with Malavai Quinn is hella fun.

I think the OP needs to look more at the context in which the sex occurs. In ME1 you have sex just before ilos as you might not come back from it alive. In ME2 you have sex just before enteriing the Omega 4 relay for the same reason. The sex is rushed because it has to be. It is your last chance and sex is a good way to consummate your feelings for one another before you meet a potentially tragic end.

From a game (and story) design perspective the romances are meant to be ancilliary. To elaborate they are meant as an optional enjoyable side of the story/game but are not meant to be a focal point. To introduce marriage would elevate the romance element and distract from the core gameplay (saving the galaxy etc) The story is Shepards story not Shepard and Ashleys or Shepard and whoevers. Its a war story with a love interest not a romance story.

As a further elaboration look at movies, in rom coms or romantic dramas weddings are frequently depicted but if you look at any other movie with LIs they dont tend to marry. Marriage is a big deal and it distracts from the main plot point. If the main plot is romantic then thats fine but if not marriage doesnt work particcularly well in games/movies

I'm just curious as to when you'd think there would of been a proper time to get married? Shepherd's pressed for time through out every game; so there seems to really only be time for a quickie, then back to action.

Marriage is a convention that may not be present in the future. In addition, when or where would Shepard ever have time to conduct said marriage in the game? He is always on a timetable. Sex is quick, pleasurable, and passionate. Spur of the moment for the lack of time and high emotion during the events.

Present or not, most people have sex before marriage anyway. Also, writing a wedding or marraige into a story is an instant mood killer.
