It really depends on how you play and how you use the game to your advantage.
-With a mage, there are defensive and healing spells you can learn to keep from losing too much health. Plus, I don't know if this counts as a spoiler or not, but there are other companions you will gain down the line (it happens with most combat-based RPG's) who can help protect you from dying. So I wouldn't rule out mages just yet.
-With shield and sword warriors, it really depends on the person. I used to think being a tank was boring too, until I actually started playing and realized there's a talent tree that lets you bash your opponent with your shield in different ways. I think that's pretty fun!
-Speaking as a player whose main character is a duel rogue; duel weaponry is actually a rather slow process. You do become very powerful down the line, but you actually start off rather weak and miss very often. And you do die very easily, that part is not exaggerated. You can counter this by investing more points in dexterity and/or fleshing out the stealth tree, but again, that takes a while to build up so you remain a little vulnerable for the first part of the game. If you expect instant results, I wouldn't recommend it. Otherwise, go crazy.
EDIT: I'm sorry, I thought you mean duel rogue, not duelist rogue. If you had duel-weaponry in mind, then maybe my advice was helpful. If not, I'm really sorry, I've never played as a non-duel weapon rogue before, so please disregard everything I've said.
Honestly though, if you're having fun with the mage, I would just keep going with that. While a tank warrior is mostly defense with little offense and a duel rogue is mostly offense with little defense, an offensive mage with a few defensive spells has the perfect combination of power and survivability. Again, I would just learn a defensive spell or two (Rock Armour and Mind Blast are extremely helpful) and/or maybe a healing spell (like Heal or Drain Life) to keep from dying and be good to go.
If my advice is inappropriate or incomplete in any way, someone please correct me. Otherwise, there you go.
